Glacier Changes on the Pik Topografov Massif, East Sayan Range, Southeast Siberia, from Remote Sensing Data

Abstract: Small mountain glaciers represent the most abundant class in many glaciarized areas around the world; however, less is known about their recent area changes under climatic variability of the last decades. The recent fluctuations of glaciers located in the inner parts of continents are the least studied. In this study we present the results of repeated mapping of seven small (<1.5 km 2 ) glaciers located in a continental setting on the northern slope of the Pik Topografov massif, East Sayan Range, southeast Sib… Show more

“…East Sayan is one of the centers of mountain glaciation in southern Siberia. There are about 270 small glaciers with total area of about 20 km 2 (Osipov et al, 2017). Due to recent climate change, the glaciers are intensively shrinking since the end of the Little Ice Age Osipova, 2014, 2018).…”

“…Moreover, glaciers in polar regions play important roles in the functions of local [2] and global ecosystems [3]. Thus, studies on the reaction of glaciers to climate fluctuations [4][5][6] and their impacts on the regional environment are exceptionally important [7].…”
