The hypolipidemic activity of leaves of rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis), a herbal plant was studied. Three groups of BALB/c mice were treated as following: the first group was fed with normal diet (sugar & water), the second group was fed with high cholesterol (HC) (2% by weight) and coconut oil (25% by weight), for 36 days, and the third group was fed with HC diet and given 100 mg/kg rosemary extract (10% w/v) during the last 15 days of treatment period. There was a significant decrease (P < 0.001) in plasma total cholesterol (TC)(-68.57%), low density lipoprotein (LDL) (-56.34%), and triglycerides (TG) (-182.61%). A significant increase in high density lipoprotein (HDL) (38.53%) was obtained in rosemary-fed mice compared to HC mice. In another experiment, the immunomodulatory activity of aqueous extract of R. officinalis was evaluated in BALB/c mice. Mice were treated with three doses of extract (10, 50, 100 mg/kg body weight) for 8 weeks. Humoral immunity against membrane proteins of sheep erythrocytes measured by ELISA showed that IgM (Immunoglobulin M) response significantly increased by 26.95%, 36.5%, 70.78% respectively, in mice fed with 10, 50, and 100 mg/kg of rosemary as compared to the control group (P < 0.05). IgG (Immunoglobulin G) response increased significantly at all antibody titers, in mice fed with rosemary at doses of 10, 50, and 100 mg/kg. Meanwhile, there was no significant different in IgM and IgG responses between 50 and 100 mg/kg (P > 0.05). On the other hand, concanavalin A-stimulated proliferation of spleen cells from mice fed with 100 mg rosemary extract was significantly higher by 57% than that of cells from the corresponding control animals.

This review presents an historical overview of stereological methods used for the quantitative evaluation of plant anatomical and cytological structures. It includes the origins of these methods up to the most recent developments such as the application of stereology based on 3D images. We focus especially on leaf, as the vast majority of studies of plant microscopic structure examine this organ. An overview of plant cell ultrastructure measurements as well as plant anatomical characteristics (e.g., plant tissue volume density, internal leaf surface area, number and mean size of mesophyll cells and chloroplast number), which were estimated by stereological methods most frequently, is presented. We emphasize the importance of proper sampling needed for unbiased measurements. Furthermore, we mention other methods used for plant morphometric studies and briefly discuss their relevance, precision, unbiasedness and efficiency in comparison with unbiased stereology. Finally, we discuss reasons for the sparse use of stereology in plant anatomy and consider the future of stereology in plant research.

Professor Arthur Sá, s/n, RESUMO: Plantas medicinais são utilizadas mundialmente como uma das principais formas de cuidado primário de saúde. No entanto, a literatura indica que muitas espécies podem apresentar composição química variável, toxicidade ou difícil identificação. O objetivo do presente estudo foi obter critérios úteis para o controle de qualidade farmacognóstico das principais espécies vegetais de uso popular no estado do Rio Grande do Norte, utilizando metodologias de análise botânica (morfodiagnose macro e microscópica) e química (triagem fitoquímica e cromatografia em camada delgada), evitando assim adulterações ou uso inadequado dessas plantas medicinais no estado. No total, sete espécies foram analisadas Acmella oleracea, Chenopodium ambrosioides, Lippia alba, Mentha piperita, Ocimum gratissimum, Peumus boldus e Rosmarinus officinalis. Diversos marcadores botânicos e fitoquímicos foram identificados, contribuindo dessa forma para a correta identificação destas espécies de plantas medicinais importantes no estado do Rio Grande do Norte.Palavras-chave: plantas medicinais, Rio Grande do Norte, morfodiagnose, triagem fitoquímica, cromatografia em camada delgada (CCD) ABSTRACT: Botanical and chemical identification of plant species of popular use in RioGrande do Norte, Brazil. Medicinal plants are worldwide used as one of the main forms of primary healthcare. However, the literature indicates that many species may have variable chemical composition, toxicity, or even difficult identification. The aim of this study was to obtain useful criteria for pharmacognostic quality control of the main plant species of popular use in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, using methods of botanical (macro and microscopic morphodiagnosis) and chemical (phytochemical screening and thin-layer chromatography) analysis, thus preventing adulteration or inappropriate use of these medicinal plants in the state. In total, seven species were analyzed Acmella oleracea, Chenopodium ambrosioides, Lippia alba, Mentha piperita, Ocimum gratissimum, Peumus boldus and Rosmarinus officinalis. Several botanical and phytochemical markers were identified, thereby contributing to the correct identification of these important medicinal plant species in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
