Global and Current Research Trends of Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy/Biportal Endoscopic Spinal Surgery in the Treatment of Lumbar Degenerative Diseases: A Bibliometric and Visualization Study

Abstract: The study aimed to make a bibliometric analysis of the current research situation in unilateral biportal endoscopy/biportal endoscopic spinal surgery (UBE/BESS). Research data sets were acquired from the Web of Science database. The study chosed “biportal endoscopic spinal surgery” OR “two portal endoscopic spinal surgery” OR “percutaneous biportal endoscopic decompression” OR “unilateral biportal endoscopy” OR “irrigation endoscopic discectomy” as the search terms. The literature search was limited to article… Show more

“…However, no research on bibliometric analysis has been conducted to synthesize the literature in this domain. Bibliometric analysis ( 29 31 ), which has been widely used in many fields ( 32 , 33 ), is an information visualization method for comprehending the knowledge structure and identifying the research frontiers or hotspots of a specific field by summarizing all of the literature in that field from around the world and quantitatively analyzing the literature data and metrological characteristics using mathematical and statistical methods. The data from the database may also be used to analyze and compare the research status of other nations, institutions, and authors, so that we can better comprehend scientific publications and better illustrate the research patterns ( 34 36 ).…”

“…By 2013, Soliman ( 28 ) had introduced the pump irrigation system to biportal endoscopic spinal surgery and proposed “irrigation endoscopic discectomy.” In 2017, Heo ( 29 ), for the first time, named the unilateral access biportal spinal endoscopy technique “Unilateral Biportal Endoscopy.” However, some scholars also called it “Biportal Endoscopy Spine Surgery (BESS)” ( 30 32 ). At present, both UBE and BESS represent biportal endoscopic spinal surgery ( 33 ). Since then, this technique has been rapidly developed by spine surgeons worldwide through continuous research and improvement.…”

“…Bibliometric analysis is performed with visualization tools to analyze the numerous published academic literature, which has advantages over other conventional research methods, such as study review, meta-analysis, and experimental or clinical research, which are not able to reach the same depth analysis results (16)(17)(18)(19)(20). With the help of visualization applications, namely, CiteSpace and VOSviewer software, bibliometric analysis can qualitatively and quantitatively explore the contribution of authors, countries/regions, institutions, and their cooperation relationships.…”
