Cabomba caroliniana A. Gray, an ornamental submerged plant indigenous to tropical America, has been introduced to numerous countries in Europe, Asia, and Oceania, impacting native aquatic ecosystems. Given this species is a popular aquarium plant and widely traded, there is a high risk of introduction and invasion into other environments. In the current study the potential global geographic distribution of C. caroliniana was predicted under the effects of climate change and human influence in an optimised MaxEnt model. The model used rigorously screened occurrence records of C. caroliniana from hydro informatic datasets and 20 associated influencing factors. The findings indicate that temperature and human-mediated activities significantly influenced the distribution of C. caroliniana. At present, C. caroliniana covers an area of approximately 1531×104 km2 of appropriate habitat, especially in the south-eastern parts of South, central and North America, Southeast Asia, eastern Australia, and most of Europe. The suitable regions are anticipated to expand under future climate scenarios; however, the dynamics of the changes vary between different extents of climate change. For example, C. caroliniana is expected to expand to higher latitudes, following global temperature increases under SSP1–2.6 and SSP2–4.5 scenarios, however, intolerance to temperature extremes may mediate invasion at higher latitudes under future extreme climate scenarios, e.g., SSP5–8.5. Owing to the severe impacts its invasion causes, early warning and stringent border quarantine processes are required to guard against the introduction of C. caroliniana especially in the invasion hotspots such as, Peru, Italy, and South Korea.

Glyphosate’s primary metabolite, aminomethylphosphonic acid (AMPA) is the most detected pollutant in surface waters. Recent studies have raised concerns regarding its toxicity, yet the involved underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. A disruption of the gut microbiome, which plays a crucial role in host health, could be the mediator of most adverse effects. We investigated the impact of AMPA exposure on the gut microbiome of spined toad tadpoles (Bufo spinosus). We hypothesized that AMPA could alter the gut microbiota composition and that these effects could depend on the microbiota source. We exposed tadpoles to minute concentrations of AMPA and analyzed their faecal microbiota using 16S rRNA gene sequencing as a proxy of the gut microbiota. AMPA exposure decreased the gut bacterial biomass and affected bacterial community composition of tadpole’s faeces. Furthermore, we observed interactions between AMPA exposure and maternal body condition on the Bacteroidota and Actinobacteriota phyla abundances. This suggests a maternal effect on early-life microbial colonizers that could influence the response of the gut microbiome to AMPA. These findings highlight the importance of considering the gut microbiome when studying the effects of environmental contaminants. Further research is needed to elucidate the long-term implications of this microbiome alteration for amphibian health.

Unravelling patterns and mechanisms of biogeographical transitions is crucial if we are to understand compositional gradients at large spatial extents, but no studies have thus far examined breakpoints in community composition of freshwater plants across continents. Using a dataset of almost 500 observations of lake plant community composition from six continents, we examined, for the first time, if such breakpoints in geographical space exist for freshwater plants and how well a suite of ecological factors (including climatic and local environmental variables) can explain transitions in community composition from the subtropics to the poles. Our combination of multivariate regression tree (MRT) analysis and k-means partitioning suggests that the most abrupt breakpoint exists between temperate to boreal regions on the one hand and freshwater plant communities harbouring mainly subtropical or Mediterranean assemblages on the other. The spatially structured variation in current climatic conditions is the most likely candidate for controlling these latitudinal patterns, although one cannot rule out joint effects of eco-evolutionary constraints in the harsher high-latitude environments and post-glacial migration lags after Pleistocene Ice Ages. Overall, our study supports the foundations of global regionalisation for freshwater plants and anticipates further biogeographical research on freshwater plant communities once datasets have been harmonised for conducting large-scale spatial analyses.
