“…Cardiovascular surgery is the single biggest cause of mortality in the country with estimated 27% deaths, 11,12 and in comparison, to the neighboring countries in South Asia, the volume of surgery remains low with 77.6 cardiac surgeries per million population, which is a minor improvement compared to previously reported a few years back but still ranks among the lowest in the region. 9,13 With this huge burden of disease in a population of approximately 29.1 million, there is still a tremendous need for trained surgeons in the country. At present, only two institutions are overseeing a training program for cardiovascular and thoracic surgery in the country with four individuals provided that opportunity annually.…”
