Global Population Structure of a Worldwide Pest and Virus Vector: Genetic Diversity and Population History of the Bemisia tabaci Sibling Species Group

Abstract: The whitefly Bemisia tabaci sibling species (sibsp.) group comprises morphologically indiscernible lineages of well-known exemplars referred to as biotypes. It is distributed throughout tropical and subtropical latitudes and includes the contemporary invasive haplotypes, termed B and Q. Several well-studied B. tabaci biotypes exhibit ecological and biological diversity, however, most members are poorly studied or completely uncharacterized. Genetic studies have revealed substantial diversity within the group b… Show more

“…Because of their relatively rapid rates of molecular evolution compared with nuclear loci, mitochondrial loci are often used to evaluate geographic variation in introduced species and to trace their movement and origins . The biodiversity of D. citri has been assessed in several regions using mitochondrial COI markers .…”

“…Mitochondrial DNA is subject to strong genetic drift because of its maternal and haploid mode of inheritance . Genetically, it can be highly informative in the case of multiple sources of invasion, and mitochondrial genetic markers are often used to evaluate the geographic origin and colonisation history of introduced pests . Most recently, several researchers used mitochondrial COI (mt COI ) markers to analyse the genetic structure of the invasive pest, D. citri .…”

“…Improvements in molecular tools led to the application of sequencing of 16S rRNA, cytochrome oxidase I gene portions in the mitochondrial genome, and the nuclear ribosomal intergenic spacer 1 (ITS1) [55,56,67,68]. Microsatellite markers have also been developed and used to study B. tabaci populations [69,70]. Recent advances have utilized SNP genotyping and nuclear genes [71][72][73].…”
