Global Research on Artificial Intelligence from 1990–2014: Spatially-Explicit Bibliometric Analysis

Abstract: Abstract:In this article, we conducted the evaluation of artificial intelligence research from 1990-2014 by using bibliometric analysis. We introduced spatial analysis and social network analysis as geographic information retrieval methods for spatially-explicit bibliometric analysis. This study is based on the analysis of data obtained from database of the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-Expanded) and Conference Proceedings Citation Index-Science (CPCI-S). Our results revealed scientific outputs, subject… Show more

“…No other studies are available as yet in the body of literature on bibliometric studies covering quantitative and qualitative description of quantum computing research per se. However, a number of bibliometric studies do exist on computer science research in general [8][9][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19] and its subfields such as artificial intelligence [18,20], cloud computing [19][20][21][22], cryptography [21,23], computational intelligence [22,24], granular computing [23,25], grid computing [24,26], parallel computing [25,27], pervasive and ubiquitous computing [26,28], and software engineering [27,29], etc. in particular.…”

“…Collaboration type was determined by the addresses of the authors, where the term "single-country article" was assigned if the researchers' addresses were from the same country. The term "international collaborative article" was designated to those publications that were co-authored by researchers from multiple countries [17,25]. The number of publications, citation times, as well as CPP were all calculated.…”

“…For this reason, the use of bibliometrics-a research area of library and information sciences that studies bibliographic material using quantitative methods [10,11] and bibliometric indicators-has been extended in recent years in order to analyze the situation of a country's research, its evolution over time and its position in the international context. Most bibliometric studies analyze specific disciplines, yet it has been lately used to present the basic structure of a specific journal in order to provide a complete bibliometric overview throughout several years [12,13].…”
