Global stability and cost-effectiveness analysis of COVID-19 considering the impact of the environment: using data from Ghana

Abstract: Highlights COVID-19 spread dynamics with environmental compartment is proposed. Global stability of the disease-free and endemic equilibria was obtain using Lyapunov’s function. Global sensitivity analysis was studied. A cost-effectiveness analysis presented.

“…where, constants w i , i = 1, 2, ..., 5 are positive weights required to balance the corresponding terms in the objective functional. Following other literature on COVID-19 control problems [9,16,17,40,41], quadratic costs on the controls are chosen, where 1/2w 4 u 2 1 (t) is the total cost of implementing the preventive measure, and 1/2w 5 u 2 2 (t) is the total cost of managing active cases over the time interval [0,…”

“…It is important to determine the most cost-effective optimal control measure among the single and combined implementation of the two given control measures in order to optimally mitigate the spread of COVID-19 at the lowest cost possible. Hence, cost-effectiveness analysis is explored using the incremental cost effectiveness ratio (ICER) [9,24,46,47,48]. To avoid dissipation of available limited resources, ICER is used to compare any two competing measures for controlling the spread of disease or related problems.…”

“…The authors used Pakistan's actual data and discussed the potential control and infection removal from Pakistan. In [14], where potential removal of the virus was discussed, the data from Ghana and its study using a mathematical model were taken into consideration.…”

“…The first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Africa was reported from Egypt on 14 th February 2020 [10] and in sub-Saharan Africa from Nigeria on 28 th February 2020 [11]. Ghana recorded its first confirmed case of COVID-19 on 12 th March 2020 [12]. Following this, all suspected cases of COVID-19 were confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) as recommended by the WHO [13].…”
