Global urban subway development, construction material stocks, and embodied carbon emissions

Abstract: Urban subway system, as an important type of urban transportation infrastructure, can provide mass mobility service and help address urban sustainability challenges such as traffic congestion and air pollution. The continuous construction of subways, however, causes large amounts of construction materials and embodied greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In this study, we characterized the patterns of subway development, construction material stocks, and embodied emissions covering all 219 cities in the world in wh… Show more

“…This mass had dramatically increased by 28 times and added up to 3.65 Gt in 2020 (mean value, with a minimum of 3.60 Gt and a maximum of 3.71Gt) (Fig. 1b), larger than current global subway stocks (2.5 Gt) 29 1b). In terms of bridge stocks, the majority amounts are located in box girder (39%), following the base platform (22%), pier (21%), and pile foundation (18%).…”

“…The bridge is 1.8 km in length, with a planned investment of 3.61 billion RMB and a planned construction period of three years. The selected case studies are extremely useful UTIPs, providing connectivity and mobility for a modern society, which is critical to ensure human development and to respond to sustainability challenges (Mao et al, 2021;Thacker et al, 2019;Wey, 2019). These two types of projects are different in nature and construction technology.…”

“…Second, due to the lack of basic subject accumulation and technological breakthroughs, it is difficult to meet both the urgent requirements of global sustainable development and the needs of scientific decision-making. In recent years, large-scale urbanization, carbon emissions, and sustainable development relationships have combined into a newly emerging and multidisciplinary field of research (Behera & Dash, 2017 ; Zhang et al, 2019 ; Mao et al, 2021 ); therefore, there are shortcomings in the accumulation of basic subject research compared with other classical subject fields.…”
