Global vs. local &amp;#x2014; Experiences from a distributed software project course using agile methodologies

With an emphasis on adaptive processes that respond to uncertainties, the Agile Project Management (APM) approach has evolved the way projects are managed beyond the traditional processes. This study aims to investigate recent literature on APM to discover the adoption drivers and the critical success factors that influence APM success and provide recommendations for the development of APM best practices. The study conducted a literature search on academic databases ABI/Inform, ACM Digital Library, EBSCO Host, and IEEE Xplore with keywords 'agile' and 'project management' for peer-reviewed English language articles published between January 2015 and January 2020 to discover insights regarding adoption drivers and critical success factors. Eleven (11) drivers of adoption and thirteen (13) critical success factors related to the project dimensions of Project, Team, and Culture were discovered. The findings of this study outline the current state of APM adoption and use and is relevant to project management practitioners and researchers.

Contemporary approaches and trends in software engineering courses have been continuously updated over the last four decades. Adaptation to industry needs is crucial for future educational purposes and vice versa. Tech startups have become a driving force in the economy and a major industry trend. The goal of this paper is first to critically assess how contemporary industry trends and in particular, tech startups have influenced the updating of software engineering curricula. The second goal is to evaluate the contribution of industry and in particular, tech startups, processes and models in present learning approaches. The third goal addresses how stakeholders have helped in the infusion of industry trends and in particular, in tech startup approaches in academia. This study is a systematic literature mapping. A total of 138 papers were selected based on education goals, research, and contribution type. Of the primary education topics, 78% were related to teaching strategies, 9% to globalization and training methods, and less than 5% to tech startup and industry innovation. Common stakeholders accounting for the change are students, researchers, and lecturers and project managers, product owners, customers, and clients from industry. This study showed that industrial models or methods involving Agile and Scrum have been widely adopted. Less investigated areas that have recently become common industry trends, such as tech startup models adopting lean methodology, require further attention and might create opportunities for updating the curricula. We discuss future model possibilities for exploiting tech startups as a means for renewing future capstone courses. Cultural and personal issues resulting from dispersed teams are considered to be serious barriers to form trust and organize effective agile teams. However, apart from separate, reported evidence of such issues from work experience, there has been no theoretical classification in literature. This paper provides a list and analysis of common challenges mainly resulting from cultural differences and barriers in Agile Software Development (ASD) offshore teams. The data source comprise articles published in IEEE, mostly of conferences related to ASD. Among the articles, papers with concrete evidence of Agile Methods (AM) implementation were selected. The results show that despite the relative significance of such issues, ASD adopters typically still rely on their own experience, and creativity rather than using well-defined methods. Moreover, this study reveals that the notion of trust, as discussed in the literature, mainly refers to maintaining the pace of communication, which is the focal point in ASD.
