Glycemic Control and its Predictors among Diabetic Patients Attending a Tertiary Hospital in Nigeria: A Retrospective Observational Study

Abstract: The prevalence of diabetes and its associated complications have continued to increase globally. Tight glycemic control has been one of the effective ways towards the management of diabetes and its complications. This study was conducted to investigate independent predictors of glycemic levels among patients with diabetes attending a diabetic clinic of a tertiary health care facility. More than half (54.2%) of the 216 participants had good glycemic control. Participants with Body Mass Index (BMI) more … Show more

“…32 In Nigeria, referral health facilities usually have the best expertise and this may explain why glycaemic control among patients with diabetes attending tertiary care facilities tends to be relatively good although a few studies have reported a contrary finding. 33 The findings of this study showed a statistically significant positive correlation between 10-year cardiovascular risk, using QRISK 3, and atherogenic index of plasma (r=0.368; p=0.002). Bo et al, also reported a significant association between AIP and the presence of cardiovascular risk factors.…”

“…A t o t a l o f n i n e 25,32,34,35,56,76,78,79,81 studies focused on glycaemic control and other treatment outcomes among diabetic patients. The 35,56,76 study participants were 1,861 and three studies showed that the provision of drug therapy counseling, education and follow-up text messages (electronic intervention) significantly reduced glycated haemoglobin (A1C) concentrations and fasting blood glucose (p<0.05) levels in patients with uncontrolled DM.…”

“…Almost one in 300 children develop T1DM [2]. These findings have been documented in many countries including both developed and developing countries [2,3]. It has been reported that, the incedence of T1DM is increasing by 3-4% per year globally in light of geographical variation with a high correlation between this incedence and socio-economic factors [4,5].…”
