Gnathostomiasis: Import from Laos

Abstract: Gnathostomiasis is a nematode infestation endemic in Southeast Asia, which can involve multiple organs including the liver, eyes, gastrointestinal tract and CNS. The most common manifestation is recurrent migratory subcutaneous swellings which can appear anywhere on the body and are accompanied by pruritus and systemic symptoms such as low-grade fever, loss of appetite and nausea. The diagnosis is based on the clinical picture, history of travel, peripheral blood eosinophilia and the determination of agent-spe… Show more

“…Gnathostomiasis is most commonly encountered in European and North American healthcare settings in returning travellers from South-East Asia62 and South and Central America,63 64 though imports from Africa65 and an endemic case in Australia66 have been reported. The major risk factor for gnathostomiasis is consumption of raw freshwater seafood in endemic regions 67.…”

“…Human gnathostomiasis is caused by infection with larval gnathostomes, which is characterized clinically by creeping eruption in subcutaneous and intermuscular tissues due to migrating larvae [1]. It is also known that Gnathostoma larvae occasionally invade the visceral organs, including the liver, lungs, eyes, and even the brain [1,2].Human gnathostomiasis is known to be prevalent in Southeast Asia, including Thailand, Lao PDR, and Myanmar, but this nematode infection is very rare in Cambodia [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. Only 1 case of ocular gnathostomiasis was reported in Cambodia [12].…”
