Challenges to agile software project management practices in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic

The Agile approach is focused on individuals and customer satisfaction, based on the dynamic and streamlined work of a team that is capable of adapting, and adapting the project to changing scenarios and demands. However, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Agile teams accustomed to in-person communication have encountered the challenges of working from home. The main objective of this research is to analyze the challenges generated by the pandemic context, and the consequent social distance, for the development of software projects that use Agile approaches within a large state-owned company and identify the effect it had on the course and results of the projects. The research was qualitative in nature and had two exploratory diagnostic stages. The findings indicate that there were no negative impacts of relevance on project deliveries. On the one hand, results indicated losses in socialization, in spontaneous exchanges of knowledge, and in interaction among teams, as well as a demand for greater engagement of professionals. Additionally, limitations were revealed for more complex discussions and knowledge management. The study highlights solutions that were found and/or suggested for many challenges, contributing to the literature on best practices for the Agile approach, and is focused on the unprecedented context of the COVID-19 pandemic. Our findings can contribute to other companies with a similar profile that work with Agile projects, besides contributing to building a dialogue between the academic and business environments.

Software engineering is the field of development of information systems. However, the development process can often be complicated. Therefore, many researchers have introduced their approaches to manage the complication. This led to the introduction of new subfields such as change management, and organisational change. Agile can be regarded as a collection of best practices with the same values and principles. Since the introduction of Agile manifesto, many researchers, manufacturers, and organisations have introduced their thoughts, tools, and models to enhance the understanding and adoption of Agile. Sharing a similar understanding of Agile among people involved is essential in order to adopt it. This paper investigates the understanding of Agile among IT professionals. In addition, the factors that impact the understanding and adoption of Agile are highlighted and studied. A survey methodology was employed in this research among IT professionals from different organisations. The results of this study show that productivity and ability to accept change are conflicting the understanding among participants. Furthermore, the experience of participants has an impact on the ways in which Agile are adopted.

PurposeThis study aims to determine the factors influencing employee retention working in construction-related small-medium enterprises (SMEs) in Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. The study contributes to the construction site manager getting insight into employees' desired goals in the workplace. Furthermore, the study provided information about the diversity of generations (age groups), income levels and educational levels of employees working in the construction industry in the Krung Thep area.Design/methodology/approachThe researcher decided to investigate a sample size of 386 respondents based on the target population. A purposive sampling method was selected by giving out questionnaires to the respondents employed in construction-related SMEs in Krung Thep. The questions comprised two major parts, which are demographic questions and measuring variables relevant to the independent variables.FindingsThe study's aim of findings is to investigate the factors that retain the employees who are pursuing their careers in construction-related SMEs. The findings of this research are to unveil that task interdependence significantly contributes to agile working. Lastly, employee retention is significantly affected by agile working among employees in an organisation.Research limitations/implicationsThis research only studies factors influencing employee retention among those of all ranges of ages, incomes and educational levels working in construction-related SMEs. The researcher collected data on the income level, age group and educational level of employees to use for further study.Originality/valueThe study is about determining the factor that affects agile working and employee retention among those working in construction-related SMEs.
