“…There is a broad range of potential NC-templating molecules ( Fig. 1 ), including small molecules containing thiols, 13 such as glutathione (GSH) 14 and 2-mercaptosuccinic acid (MSA), 15 that work as both reducing and stabilizing agents and are characterized by the strong interaction of the sulfur atoms with gold. Polymers, like polyethyleneimine (PEI), are also good templating agents but they should contain hydroxyl or amino groups.…”

“…In terms of surface ligands, AuNCs are generally classified into thiolated AuNCs, dendrimer- or polymer-protected AuNCs, protein-templated or protein-protected AuNCs, DNA-templated AuNCs, and small-molecule-protected AuNCs [ 13 ]. Among various AuNCs, glutathione (GSH)-stabilized AuNCs (GSH-AuNCs) have been demonstrated to have many interesting properties and have been used in the detection of heavy metal ions such as Cr 3+ [ 14 ], Cu 2+ [ 15 ], Hg 2+ [ 16 , 17 , 18 ], and Ag + [ 19 , 20 ]; thiol [ 21 , 22 ]; and alkaline peptide and alkaline phosphatase [ 23 , 24 ]. GSH-AuNCs have also been applied to detect the electron deficiency of dopamine [ 25 ].…”

“…The carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), as one of the most common tumor markers, usually circulates at high concentrations in the patients infected with various cancers including malignant and epithelial tumors. , Henceforth, its effective monitoring in body fluids is of considerable importance for the timely alerting and therapy of cancer . In this regard, a number of techniques such as the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, fluorescence-based method, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS)-based immunoassay , have been sequentially developed to detect CEA in blood. Among them, the SERS-based immunoassay is superior for its unique fingerprint spectrum, narrow spectral bandwidth, fluorescence quenching, and single-molecule sensitivity.…”
