Gold Nanoparticles Interacting with β-Cyclodextrin–Phenylethylamine Inclusion Complex: A Ternary System for Photothermal Drug Release

Abstract: We report the synthesis of a 1:1 β-cyclodextrin-phenylethylamine (βCD-PhEA) inclusion complex (IC) and the adhesion of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) onto microcrystals of this complex, which forms a ternary system. The formation of the IC was confirmed by powder X-ray diffraction and NMR analyses ((1)H and ROESY). The stability constant of the IC (760 M(-1)) was determined using the phase solubility method. The adhesion of AuNPs was obtained using the magnetron sputtering technique, and the presence of AuNPs was … Show more

“…Considering that the AuNPs have been initially deposited on crystals of the IC, without another precursor, the subsequent solubilization of this system allows the particles to be covered only by the complexes [ 52 , 66 ], remaining stable, with form and size discussed above by TEM. A scheme that represents the colloidal solution obtained from AuNPs in the solid state is shown in Fig 9 .…”

“…In this system, gold nanoparticles were incorporated in different materials to fabricate nanostructures for targeted drug delivery, for example, thermal-sensitive microcapsules, hydrogels, and films [167][168][169][170][171]. When the nanostructures arrive at the target area, upon the irradiation of a light within their LSPR region gold nanoparticles generate heat and lead to the destruction of the nanostructure, and finally drugs will be released from the nanostructure [172][173][174]. There are four major scenarios for the fabrication of targeted drug delivery nanostructures using photothermal effect of gold nanoparticles [49]: first one: the drug is inserted in a polymeric matrix surrounded by gold nanoparticles.…”

“…It is found the DOX release from DOX/G-TSL was improved 70% upon NIR irradiation in contrast with TSL alone. Sierpe and coworkers reported a ternary system, in which 1 : 1 -cyclodextrin-phenylethylamine ( CD-PhEA) encapsulated composites were synthesized, and then the composite was bounded by GNPs [174].…”

“…Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are promising therapeutic agents, which have been widely studied in applications, such as drug delivery and diagnostics [21][22][23][24][25][26]. These nanoparticles are interesting for tracking analysis, as they display physical properties, such as surface plasmon resonance and scattering, which facilitates analysis by high-resolution imaging techniques, including computer tomography (CT), surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS), and photoacoustics [23,27,28].…”
