Gold@Polymer Nanostructures with Tunable Permeability Shells for Selective Catalysis

Abstract: A heart of gold: Au@polymer nanostructures with hydrophobic mesoporous shells show tunable permeability and Au cores with adjustable diameters. This nanocomposite exhibits selective catalytic activity for hydrophobic molecules.

“…[319][320][321] When responsive or amphiphilic polymers are attached onto gold nanocrystals, the resultant composites show stimulus properties in response to changes of pH, 322, 323 ionic strength, 35 temperature, 23,36,312,313,322,[324][325][326] or solvent. 316,327,328 Interestingly, a protective polymer layer with tunable permeability can also trap and release target molecules, which was applied for selective catalysis 329,330 and showed a reversible SERS effect. 331 Many approaches have been studied to fabricate gold/polymer core/shell nanocomposites which can be roughly categorized as grafting-to, in situ sol-gel process, grafting-through, and grafting-from.…”

“…The catalytic reduction of nitrobenzene (NB) by NaBH 4 has been also applied as model reaction to test the catalytic activity of metal nanocomposite particles [64]. Here Au-PNIPA yolk-shell particles, that is, a single Au nanoparticle is encapsulated in a hollow thermosensitive PNIPA shell, have been used as catalyst as shown in Fig.…”

“…25,26 Fig. 3 shows the typical change of UV-vis absorption of the reaction mixture when catalyzed by the Au/C thin sheets prepared by calcination at 600 o C. The original aqueous 4-nitrophenol solution was yellow and showed characteristic absorption at the wavelength of 317 nm.…”
