Gonio-hyperspectral imaging system based on light-emitting diodes for the analysis of automotive coatings

Abstract

Goniochromatic pigments, such as automotive coatings, are known by their appearance changes - especially of colour and visual texture - as a function of the angles of illumination and observation; they are classified as pearlescent (chroma and hue shifts) and metallic pigments (lightness variations). For this reason, their characterization through precise spectral and spatial data is of great importance in the industry. Accordingly, the main goal of this thesis is the development of a gonio-hyperspectral imaging system capable of acquiring spectral images with high spatial resolution using different angular configurations of illumination and observation. Conventional commercial systems used for this purpose provide accurate spectral information but they lack from spatial resolution as they use generally a photodiode and not an imaging sensor. The system has been designed to cover part of the ultraviolet (UV), the visible (VIS), and part of the infrared (IR) range of the electromagnetic spectrum. This thesis was primarily focused on the design, characterisation, validation and application of the system, which is based on light-emitting diodes (LEDs). It includes a LED-based light source with 28 spectral bands from 368 nm to 1309 nm and one with white illumination, which can be automatically positioned in front of the sample; additionally, it has a CCD camera with sensitivity from 200 nm to 1000 nm and an InGaAs camera with sensitivity from 900 nm to 1750 nm; a motorised rotation stage that controls the angle of observation by rotating the cameras around the sample and another that controls the angle of illumination by moving the sample are also used. 30 pearlescent, 30 metallic and 30 solid samples of commercial automotive coatings were characterized by means of the system to analyse their spectral reflectance and colour at different geometries, following the DIN 6175-2, ASTM E2194, and ASTM E2539 standards; the textural effects of sparkle, graininess and mottling were also evaluated. Purpose-built graphical user interfaces to control the hardware and processing the information obtained with the system were implemented. The spectral and colorimetric performance of the system was evaluated in the VIS using the colour-difference formulas CIEDE2000 and AUDI2000, the mean absolute error (MAE), the root mean square error (RMSE), and the goodness-of-fit coefficient (GFC) with respect to two commercial gonio-spectrophotometers, the BYK-mac® and the X-Rite MA98®; the IR range was validated through the MAE, RMSE, and GFC with respect to the spectrometer INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS SPECTRO 320®. Regarding textural measurements, new specific indices - mainly based on first and second order statistics - have been developed in this thesis for the assessment of sparkle, graininess and mottling; the results of sparkle and graininess were compared with those of the BYK-mac® while the mottling assessment was only validated through visual observations. The system provided accurate results concerning spectral and colorimetric data for the VIS and IR range when compared with those of the reference devices. The largest differences were found for those geometries close to the specular reflection. Sparkle and graininess assessments also led to precise results, especially when applying the developed indices. Mottling results allowed to clearly differentiate between samples with and without this effect. The spectral analysis of these three textural descriptors also revealed very useful information that contributed with new measurement approaches. In conclusion, the results obtained in this thesis demonstrate the potential of the developed gonio-hyperspectral imaging system based on LEDs for the assessment of spectral, colorimetric and textural information of goniochromatic pigments in the UV, VIS and IR regions. Los pigmentos goniocromáticos, como las pinturas de automóviles, son conocidos por sus cambios de apariencia -especialmente de color y textura visual - en función de los ángulos de iluminación y observación; estos se clasifican en pigmentos perlados (cambios de tono y croma) y metalizados (variaciones de luminosidad). Por esta razón, su caracterización mediante información espectral y espacial es de gran importancia para la industria. Par lo tanto, el objetivo principal de esta tesis es el desarrollo de un sistema gonio-hiperespectral capaz de adquirir imágenes espectrales con elevada resolución espacial utilizando diferentes configuraciones angulares de iluminación y observación. Los sistemas comerciales convencionales proporcionan información espectral precisa, pero carecen de resolución espacial ya que generalmente incorporan un fotodiodo y no un sensor de imagen. El sistema se ha diseñado para cubrir parte de los rangos ultravioleta (UV), visible (VIS) y parte del infrarrojo (IR) del espectro electromagnético. Esta tesis se centró principalmente en el diseño, caracterización, validación y aplicación del sistema, el cual está basado en diodos emisores de luz (LEDs). Este incluye una fuente de luz LED con 28 bandas espectrales desde 368nm hasta 1309nm y una con iluminación blanca, las cuales se posicionan automáticamente delante de la muestra; además, incorpora una cámara CCD con sensibilidad desde 200nm hasta 1000nm y una lnGaAs sensible desde los 900nm hasta los 1750nm; una plataforma rotatoria que controla el ángulo de observación a través la rotación de las cámaras alrededor de la muestra y otra que controla el ángulo de iluminación rotando la muestra. 30 muestras perladas, 30 metalizadas y 30 sólidas de pigmentos comerciales de automóviles fueron caracterizadas mediante el sistema para analizar su reflectancia espectral y color en las diferentes geometrías, siguiendo las normas DIN 6175-2, ASTM E2194 y ASTM E2539; los efectos de textura de destello- sparkle-, granulado - graininess - y moteado - mottling - también se evaluaron. Se implementaron interfaces de usuario especialmente desarrolladas con el propósito de controlar los diferentes componentes y procesar la información obtenida. El desempeño espectral y colorimétrico se analizó en el rango VIS utilizando las fórmulas de diferencia del color CIEDE2000 y AUDl2000, el error absoluto media (MAE), la raíz del error cuadrático media (RMSE) y el coeficiente de bondad de ajuste (GFC) respecto a los resultados proporcionados par dos gonio-espectrofotómetros comerciales, el BYK-mac® y el X-Rite MA98®; el rango IR se validó mediante el MAE, el RMSE y el GFC en comparación con el espectrómetro INSTRUMENT SYSTEMS SPECTRO 320®. Respecto a las medidas de textura, nuevos índices -principalmente basados en estadísticos de primer y segundo orden- se desarrollaron para el análisis del destello, granulado y moteado; los resultados de destello y granulado se compararon con los obtenidos por el BYKmac ® mientras que la evaluación del moteado solo se validó con observaciones visuales. El sistema proporcionó resultados precisos en relación a los datos espectrales y colorimétricos para los ranges VIS e IR cuando se compararon con los de los instrumentos de referencia. Las mayores diferencias se dieron para las geometrías más cercanas al reflejo especular. Los análisis de destello y granulado también produjeron resultados precisos, especialmente al aplicar los índices desarrollados. Los resultados de moteado permitieron diferenciar claramente entre las muestras con y sin este efecto. La evaluación espectral de estos tres descriptores de textura también reveló información muy relevante que contribuyó con nuevos métodos de medida. En conclusión, los resultados obtenidos en esta tesis demuestran el potencial del sistema gonio-hiperespectral basado en LEDs desarrollado para el análisis de información espectral, colorimétrica y de textura de pigmentos goniocromáticos en el UV, VIS e IR.
