Abstract:The synthesis of 4‐hydroxyquinolines from anilines and diethyl ethoxymethylenemalonate involving the condensation to anilinomethylenemalonate, cyclo‐acylation to quinolin‐4‐one nucleus, and subsequent hydrolysis and decarboxylation is generally referred to as the Gould–Jacobs reaction. This reaction works well for anilines with electron‐donating groups at the
meta
‐position. This reaction is very useful for preparing 4‐hydroxyquinoline derivatives.
