Grace’s Story

Abstract: Some sexually abused women in mental health settings are reporting prolonged incest and yet little is known about the circumstances that enable fathers to sexually abuse their daughters over a period of decades. This article draws from the life history of Grace, a woman who survived prolonged incest, in order to document and analyze the interplay of familial, social, and political factors that entrap girls and women within prolonged incestuous abuse.

“…Victims of (IF)CSA may suffer from a range of adverse effects which may manifest in child-and/or adulthood. These broadly include: feelings of confusion, humiliation, fear of rejection, and being used (Mey and Neff, 1982); disturbed sexual functioning, marital breakdown (Beitchman et al, 1991); chronic headaches (Roesler and Wind, 1994); disbelief, confusion, guilt, anger (Phelan, 1995); problems in building and sustaining relationships (Newman Lubell and Peterson, 1998); feelings of "dirtiness" and worthlessness (DiGeorgio-Miller, 1998); compulsive spending, nightmares (Rudd and Herzberger, 1999); low self-esteem, insomnia, flashbacks, a perception of the inability to please others, and work in low paying jobs (Salter, 2013). Victims of IFCSA may also experience a shattered sense of meaning and belief in a "just world"where people get what they deserve and deserve what they get (Hudson, 2013).…”

“…20 It is argued, in regard to revenge desires aroused by abusive living, that they establish the spread of violence and provoke outrage, according to a survey that describes the wrath of a 50-year-old woman who survived her father's prolonged incest since the age of five of age. 21 The feeling of revolt seized is highlighted as another aspect that drew attention. It was interpreted, in the face of subjectivity, the unconscious desire of the participants to return to the point before the abusive experience, that is, to return to a life free of oppression.…”

“…While the role of journalists is critical in addressing issues affecting society especially for the marginalized group including children, violations and damage caused by the coverage highlighted the need to regulate the practice of journalism (Frost, 2015;Fengler et al, 2015). This is reflected in the famous case of Elisabeth Fritzl, a victim of intrafamilial sexual abuse in which her father held her captive (Middleton, 2016;Salter, 2013). According to Connolly (2009), the British tabloids led the pack, and it was the Sun that published the first grainy picture of Elisabeth -her face pixelated -following her move to a new home.…”
