Grain Boundary Processes in Strengthening, Weakening, and Superplasticity

Abstract: Grain boundaries provide strength to materials at low temperatures by impeding slip transfer and they weaken materials at high temperatures by intergranular creep processes such as grain boundary sliding (GBS) and diffusion creep. At very fine nanocrystalline grain sizes of <10 nm, it is possible to observe grain boundary weakening rather than strengthening at room temperature. Superplastic flow is observed in a wide range of materials, but the common phenomenology of a high strain rate sensitivity and extensi… Show more

“…2(b)), ZH parameter (determined from y-intercept) is 1.11e ( 14) and apparent creep activation energies (determined from slope of ln(strain rate, in h) vs 1/T plot) vary from 364.77 kJ/mol in regime 1 to 377.68 kJ/mol in regime 2. Regimes 1 and 2 are sequential [36].…”

“…Accordingly, the concurrent process of GBS and GBS being accommodated by intragranular dislocation and the generation of GNDs come together to contribute to the record elongation by postponing the initiation of cracks at interphase boundaries. A detailed survey on the superplasticity of HEAs shows that the accommodation of GBS by dislocation activity is rather limited 43 .…”

“…The Hall–Petch relation is usually used to illustrate the effect of grain size on yield stress and is given as [ 31 ]: where is the yield stress, is a friction stress, is the grain size and is a constant.…”
