“…5. Recent studies 54,55 explored newer methods to examine threedimensional effects of the GB network on corrosion or stress corrosion cracking propagation by focused ion beam (FIB) serial sectioning and three-dimensional electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and is planned for a future follow-up study. FIB crosssectional and/or three-dimensional EBSD provide improved means to determine the full macroscopic GB description and localized GB network effects.…”

“…For instance, DIC can be used to detect crack initiation; examples include the effect of strain state on high cycle fatigue initiation [28] and in situ studies of stress corrosion crack initiation at ambient [29,30] and elevated temperatures [31]. Some early analyses used leastsquares methods to fit the Williams' series to the DIC results, and obtained the mode I SIF [32].…”

“…The relationship between thermally induced Cr depletion and IGSCC were reported [5]. However, it has been observed that the role of the GB crystallography was likely secondary and the GB normal stress (higher than the yield strength) played the primary role in IGSCC initiation in the sensitized A304 steel, even if the proportion of the cracked low indexed GB planes (20%) was higher than the one (12%) in a random selection [51]. The chemical composition and the presence of carbides in the GB was likely decisive, but further observation and analyses are necessary for predictive models.…”
