Grandparenting Roles and Volunteer Activity

Abstract: Consistent with resource theory and the accumulation of roles, providing nonresidential grandchild care may draw grandparents into formal volunteer activity. The lower human capital resources evidenced by grandparents raising coresidential grandchildren may play a role in their lower likelihood of formal volunteering.

“…Most prior research investigating decision-making relating to volunteering has either involved population samples that include both volunteers and non-volunteers to identify any differences between the groups (Bulanda and Jendrek, 2016;Dury et al, 2016;Gil-Lacruz et al, 2017;Gray et al, 2012;Hank and Stuck, 2008;Lee and Brudney, 2009;Mitani, 2013;Plagnol and Huppert, 2009;Taniguchi, 2011;van der Horst et al, 2016;Wang et al, 2016;Warburton and Stirling, 2007;Yeung, 2016) or only included current volunteers (Hong and Morrow-Howell, 2013;Kelemen et al, 2017;Larkin, Sadler, and Mahler, 2005;. The present study adopted an alternative approach by intentionally sampling those who do not engage in formal volunteering to identify factors contributing to their lack of participation.…”

“…Among the studies to date that have specifically attempted to determine whether engaging in informal volunteering and/or caring duties competes with or complements formal volunteering among older people, no clear pattern has emerged. While most studies appear to demonstrate that there is complementarity between the two forms of activity as indicated by the tendency for individuals to participate in both (e.g., Bulanda and Jendrek, 2016;Gray, Khoo, and Reimondos, 2012;Hank and Stuck, 2008;Lee and Brudney, 2012;Plagnol and Huppert, 2009;Taniguchi, 2011), some suggest competition exists between the activities (e.g., Dury et al, 2016), and others fail to find support for either complementarity or competition (e.g., van der Horst et al, 2016).…”

“…Fourth, associations between human, social, cultural capital and volunteering among Japanese older adults were similar to those in Western countries (Bulanda and Jendrek 2016;McNamara and Gonzales 2011;Wilson and Musick 1997) despite assumed differences in the context of volunteer work. Higher education, better physical and subjective health, a larger social network and being more religious were associated with volunteering, at least for regular volunteers.…”

“…Some of this negative impact can be explained by conflict between the grandparents’ expectations of retired life and the reality of caregiving for grandchildren (Landry-Meyer & Newman, 2004). Although the association between the level of community participation of grandparents and the caregiving status of grandparents was not examined in this study, research and practitioner reports indicate that caregiving responsibilities can limit participation in age-appropriate occupations such as volunteering in the community that could promote their health and well being (Bulanda & Jendrek, 2014). …”
