“…Emulsions of TIM with Freund's incomplete adjuvant formed granulomas in the lung 0920-8534/90/$03.50 © 1990 Federation of European Microbiolosical Societies and spleen of mice as strong as those of trehalose dimycolate [3]. While analysing the biological effects of TIM, we observed that TIM in the liposome-encapsulated form retained its immunological potency without showing apparent toxicity [4]. We previously reported that intravenous injections of the llposome-encapsulated preparations of TIM enhanced the generation of cytotoxic T lymphocytes against syngeneic and allogeneic tumor cells, and augmented the natural killer activity and the antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity in spleen cells [5].…”

“…The mycotic acid derivative containing a high proportion of unsaturated fatty acids rendered macrophages cytotoxic against syngeneic mastocytoma cells in the absence of endotoxin, for over 14 days after the injection. While analysing the biological effects of TIM, we observed that TIM in the liposome-encapsulated form retained its immunological potency without showing apparent toxicity [4]. However the culture supematants of the peritoneal exudate cells were not eytoto~c.…”

“…These mycoloyl residues are attached to 2, 3, and 6' position of trehalose (25). We have also shown that this unique glycolipid possessed a potent granuloma-forming activity in lungs and spleen of mice, when administered in liposomes intravenously (30). To date, immunomodifying activities of such unsymmetrical trehalose esters of mycolates have not yet been reported.…”
