Grapevine Pinot gris virus seems to have recently been introduced to vineyards in Veneto, Italy

Abstract: Grapevine Pinot gris virus (GPGV), a member of the genus Trichovirus in the family Betaflexiviridae, was recently discovered in Italy and subsequently in other European countries and in Korea. In this study, we assessed the occurrence of GPGV in 441 samples from Western and Eastern Europe collected over the period 2002-2014. The results suggest that the virus had recently appeared in the Veneto region (Northeast Italy) and had been present in some Eastern European countries for at least 10 years. The molecular… Show more

“…Their role in virus spread under Croatian environmental conditions is unknown, but it is expected that they are vectors (Tsai et al 2010). GPGV was recently reported from different European countries (Bertazzon et al 2015;Beuve et al 2015;Martelli 2014b;Mavrič Pleško et al 2014), the United States (Al Rwahnih et al 2016), Canada (Xiao et al 2016), China (Fan et al 2015), and South Korea (Cho et al 2013). After the first report from Croatia by Bertazzon et al (2015), this study provides partial genomic data for isolates originating from autochthonous Croatian grapevine cultivars.…”

After the first report from Croatia by Bertazzon et al (2015), this study provides partial genomic data for isolates originating from autochthonous Croatian grapevine cultivars. According to the phylogenetic analysis and classification proposed by Saldarelli et al (2015), all Croatian isolates belong to the symptom-associated phylogenetic clade (Fig.…”

“…Its closest molecular relative is Grapevine berry inner necrosis virus (GINV), which induces similar symptoms on grapevines in Japan (Terai et al ., ; Yoshikawa et al ., ). After its first discovery, GPGV has been identified in many other varieties and in several countries, suggesting that its occurrence is not restricted to a few grape‐growing areas, and the distribution is much wider than previously thought (Beber et al ., ; Cho et al ., ; Raiola et al ., ; Casati et al ., ; Glasa et al ., ; Mavrič Pleško et al ., ; Morelli et al ., ; Bertazzon et al ., ; Beuve et al ., ; Angelini et al ., ; Eichmeier et al ., ; Fan et al ., ; Gazel et al ., ; Xiao et al ., ). However, the association between the symptomatology and the presence of the virus is unclear, with several reports documenting GPGV in plants with symptoms, but also in a number of symptomless grapevines (Giampetruzzi et al ., ; Saldarelli et al ., , ; Forte et al ., ; Mavrič Pleško et al ., ; Bianchi et al ., ).…”

“…The virus has been reported infecting several varieties in many European countries (Czech Republic, France, Germany, Greece, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Turkey), as well as in Australia, Canada, China, Korea and USA (Glasa et al 2014;Saldarelli et al 2015;Bertazzon et al 2016a;Eichmeier et al 2016a;Wu and Habili 2017). Its association with the disease is still not completely established, due to the existence of different viral strains and diverse cultivar's susceptibility (Saldarelli et al 2015).…”

“…As already addressed (Eichmeier et al 2016b), grapevine clones affected with viruses recognized as detrimental have been removed during many years of sanitary selections during the production process of grapevine propagation material (Basso et al 2017). As a matter of fact, it seems that GPGV is one of the prevalent viruses infecting grapevine worldwide, widely distributed in many grapegrowing areas of the world, being even considered as an emergent virus (Bertazzon et al 2016a). Since many viruses are transmitted by vectors (e.g.…”
