Graphene-Based Materials for Photoanodes in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract: This article reviews the research on the use of graphene and related materials in the photoanode of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Graphene-based materials, such as pristine graphene, graphene oxide, and reduced graphene oxide, have properties attractive for various components of the DSSC photoanode. We first provide a brief introduction to graphene properties and analyze requirements for making a high-performance photoanode. Then, we introduce applications of graphene-based materials in each part of the … Show more

“…The electrocatalytic activity of MoS 2 /graphene hybrids were first investigated in DSSCs. DSSCs have a sandwich structure with a sensitizing material-coated semiconducting layer as the photoanode, a pair of redox as the electrolyte, and a reducing catalyst as the counter electrode [ 50 ]. DSSCs have separate photoanode and counter electrode, which creates an opportunity to maximize the counter electrode catalyst without breaking the cell chemistry.…”

“…This research is focusing on investigating the optical properties of graphene-TiO2 nanocomposites film for DSSC application. Based on the FESEM result, increasing concentration of graphene has provided larger surface area compared to pure TiO2 [14,15]. Incorporation of graphene into TiO2 also enhanced the optical properties of Graphene-TiO2nanocomposites by shifting the fundamental absorption edge toward the longer wavelength [13].…”

“…Photoanode which is one of the main components in DSSC plays a significant role in the separation and transportation of electrons [6,12]. Much of research has been done to improve the properties of photoanode, such as modifying the photoanode by adding additive like graphene [13,14]. Graphene is one of the promising carbon materials as it shows some spectacular and unique potential compared to other materials such as activated carbon.…”

“…Graphene is a two-dimensional monolayer of carbon atoms densely packed in a honeycomb crystal lattice [23]. As a promising material for next-generation energy storage and conversion devices, graphene has attracted tremendous attention because of its superior properties [24][25][26][27]. Graphene exhibits a unique two-fold advantage with remarkably high electron mobility at room temperature and fast heterogeneous electron transfer at the edges.…”
