The major challenge in improving the photoelectrochemical performance of Fe2O3 lies on increasing the photon absorption capability and the charge transfer efficiency. In this work, we facilely maneuvered the morphology of Fe2O3 nanomaterials by a combination of electrospinning and hydrothermal approach. Through controlling the type, the concentration of inorganic species, and the consequent ionic strength of hydrothermal solution, the hematite with four different nanostructures (i.e., nanoflowers, nanocubes, irregular nanoparticles, and flat nanoflakes) were engineered. The narrow bandgap of 1.85 eV and the unique structure of flower-Fe2O3 allowed an enhanced photon absorption and thus a small charge transfer resistance (R ct) of 32.2 Ω. After coupling with RGO sheets, Fe2O3 nanostructures experienced decreased size and enriched defects, facilitating enhanced photoelectrochemical performance. Taking the flower-Fe2O3/RGO as an example, the R ct declined to 21.8 Ω and the steady state photocurrent density increased up to 220.2 μA/cm2 (3. folds of that of pristine flower-Fe2O3). Moreover, this improvement should also be ascribed to RGO sheets that act as a bridge to enhance the charge transfer efficiency and further retard the undesirable recombination of electrons and holes. The present work will deepen the understanding of precise control over the morphology of inorganic nanocrystals as well as their structure-related performance.

Iron oxide nanoparticles (NPs) possessing peroxidase-like catalytic activity have been widely explored in recent decades, owing to their high stability against harsh conditions, low cost, flexibility in structure design and composition, adjustable activities and excellent biocompatibility in comparison with natural enzymes. Recently, a lot of great achievements have been made in this field of iron oxide nanozymes, however, this research has now reached a bottleneck in that the maximum activity enhancement is difficult to achieve via a material design. Hence, in this work, visible light was introduced to improve the peroxidase-like activity of FeO NPs synthesized via a combination of electrospinning technology and hydrothermal reaction. Our results showed that with the assistance of visible light, FeO NPs exhibited at least 2.2-fold higher peroxidase activity than those tested under darkness, confirming the superiorly visible light promoted peroxidase-like catalytic activity of FeO NPs. Furthermore, the affinity and maximum reaction velocity of FeO nanoflowers (bandgap = 1.78 eV) towards 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenanozymeidine (TMB) were at least over 3.7 and 4.3 times greater than in FeO nanocubes (bandgap = 2.08 eV), suggesting that the reaction performance of semiconductors could be controlled by proper adjustment of the bandgap. Moreover, the FeO NPs were also successfully utilized to detect glucose. Herein, we believe that the present work exhibits a fascinating perspective for peroxidase-like catalytic fields.

Iron(III) oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ) has attracted great attention, owing to its abundant natural resources, environmental friendliness, and low cost. Nevertheless, this material possesses an inferior rate capability and a cycle stability that is similar to most transition metal oxides. Graphene, with a one-atom-thick 2D structure, possesses superior mechanical properties, electrical conductivity, and stability, and excellent electrical and electrochemical behaviors. The hierarchical structure of graphene/Fe 2 O 3 composites provides a porous conductive network, close contact between the graphene and Fe 2 O 3 , a stress buffer space for charge transport, and superior structural stability. This composite consists of high conductivity graphene with interconnected Fe 2 O 3 , thus exposing abundant active sites for redox reactions and providing sufficient contacts with the electrolyte. Consequently, materials composed of Fe 2 O 3 and graphene have been widely explored, owing to their outstanding synergistic effects. Graphene can effectively limit the volume expansion and agglomeration of Fe 2 O 3 , whereas Fe 2 O 3 can prevent the restacking of graphene at the same time. This article mainly discusses the preparation of Fe 2 O 3 /graphene materials and their applications, including supercapacitors, rechargeable batteries, catalysis, and so forth. In addition, the perspectives and challenges of Fe 2 O 3 /graphene materials for different applications are also discussed.
