Gray wolf (Canis lupus) is a natural definitive host for Neospora caninum

Abstract: The gray wolf (Canis lupus) was found to be a new natural definitive host for Neospora caninum. Neospora-like oocysts were found microscopically in the feces of three of 73 wolves from Minnesota examined at necropsy. N. caninum-specific DNA was amplified from the oocysts of all three wolves. Oocysts from one wolf were infective for the gamma interferon gene knock out (KO) mice. Viable N. caninum (designated NcWolfUS1) was isolated in cell cultures seeded with tissue homogenate from the infected mouse. Typical … Show more

“…Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite of animals that may have been misdiagnosed as Toxoplasma gondii until 1988 when it was recognized as a distinct Species (DUBEY et al, 2007(DUBEY et al, , 2011. Dogs (Canis lupus familiaris), coyotes (Canis latrans), dingoes (Canis lupus dingo), and gray wolfs (C. lupus) are considered as definitive hosts for this parasite (DUBEY et al, 2011;GONDIM et al, 2004;KING et al, 2010;McALLISTER et al, 1998).…”

“…They have similar life-cycles with different definitive hosts, being domestic and free-ranging felids (Frenkel et al 1970) for Toxoplasma and dogs, coyotes and gray wolf (McAllister et al 1998, Gondim et al 2004, Dubey et al 2011 for Neospora. Common intermediate hosts including a wide range of mammals are reported (Dubey 1999, Tenter et al 2000.…”

“…Neospora caninum is a protozoan parasite of animals that have domestic dogs, dingo (Canis familiaris), coyote (Canis latrans) and grey wolf (Canis lupus) as its definitive hosts and many species of mammals and birds as intermediate hosts (MCALLISTER et al, 1998;KING et al, 2010;DUBEY et al, 2011). In Brazil, the prevalence of antibodies in dogs from Alagoas, Bahia, Paraíba, Piauí, Pernambuco, Maranhão, Amazonas, Pará, Rondônia, Goiás, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais, Paraná and São Paulo showed occurrence values that ranged from 2.6% to 67.6% (revised by DUBEY, 2013).…”
