Environmental concerns over waste plastics’ effect on the environment are leading to the creation of biodegradable plastics. Biodegradable plastics may serve as a promising approach to manage the issue of environmental accumulation of plastic waste in the ocean and soil. Biodegradable plastics are the type of polymers that can be degraded by microorganisms into small molecules (e.g., H2O, CO2, and CH4). However, there are misconceptions surrounding biodegradable plastics. For example, the term “biodegradable” on product labeling can be misconstrued by the public to imply that the product will degrade under any environmental conditions. Such misleading information leads to consumer encouragement of excessive consumption of certain goods and increased littering of products labeled as “biodegradable”. This review not only provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art biodegradable plastics but also clarifies the definitions and various terms associated with biodegradable plastics, including oxo-degradable plastics, enzyme-mediated plastics, and biodegradation agents. Analytical techniques and standard test methods to evaluate the biodegradability of polymeric materials in alignment with international standards are summarized. The review summarizes the properties and industrial applications of previously developed biodegradable plastics and then discusses how biomass-derived monomers can create new types of biodegradable polymers by utilizing their unique chemical properties from oxygen-containing functional groups. The terminology and methodologies covered in the paper provide a perspective on directions for the design of new biodegradable polymers that possess not only advanced performance for practical applications but also environmental benefits.

Background: Edible films intended for food packaging have been produced from hydrocolloids, lipids, resins, and composites, including gelatin. Gelatin is known to have a good filming ability and has been suggested as an alternative to non-biodegradable plastics. Naturally active compounds incorporated into film packaging may not only protect the food product from oxidation and microbial contamination, but they may also alter the physicochemical properties of the film. Silver nanoparticles have been used in food packaging as active agents due to their antibacterial and antifungal properties. The addition may affect the characteristics of the packaging. Therefore, this study aims to determine the effect of the addition of silver nanoparticles on the physicochemical characteristics of edible film from Pangasius sp. skin gelatin Methods: Mangrove extract of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza was used to synthesize silver into nanoparticle size. In this study, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with different concentrations (0, 2, 4 and 8%) were added into gelatin-based edible film. The edible films produced were observed for their physicochemical characteristics, including thickness, tensile strength, elongation, water vapour transmission, moisture content, pH, and colour. Results: AgNPs affected the colour of the fish-gelatin-based edible film, as an increased concentration of AgNPs resulted in a darker film. Nevertheless, the addition of AgNPs showed no significant effect on the thickness (145–216 µm), tensile strength (14.58–19.72 MPa), elongation (21.86–54.19%), water vapour transmission (30. 91–42.55 g/m2/day), moisture content (9.57–11.16%) or pH (5.92–6.01) of the fish-gelatin-based edible film. Conclusions: The addition of AgNPs has no significant effect on gelatin-based edible film physicochemical properties except colour. Therefore, the incorporated edible film has the potential to be developed further.

The recent investigation in the development of novel multifunctional thermoplastic polymer‐based filaments has contributed to the extensive use of hybrid nanofiller combinations. Montmorillonite (MMT) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) are nanofillers with exceptional properties and their combination tends to induce synergistic property enhancement on incorporation within the polymer matrix. In our current study, CNT‐MMT hybrid has been synthesized, while XRD, FTIR, Raman, and TEM confirmed its successful formation. Different wt% (0.5–2) of CNT‐MMT were reinforced into polylactic acid (PLA) matrix and their inclusive properties were analyzed in order to obtain percolation threshold concentration. The tensile strength analysis of PLA with 1% CNT‐MMT displayed 47.4% enhancement as compared to virgin PLA, while DMA analysis confirmed storage modulus enhancement. These results were also corroborated with simulation studies using ANSYS. However, with 2% addition of CNT‐MMT, the tensile strength reduced due to nanofiller agglomeration, which was also verified with SEM studies. The thermal and electrical properties of nanocomposites also augmented considerably due to CNT‐MMT reinforcement with electrical conductivity of PLA + 1% CNT‐MMT enhanced by 9 orders of magnitude. These multifunctional filaments tend to produce refined 3D printed structure using FDM and could be harnessed toward advanced 3D printing applications for commercial devices.Highlights Different wt% of CNT‐MMT were reinforced into polylactic acid (PLA) matrix and their inclusive properties were analyzed.
