Green Scenarios for Power Generation in Vietnam by 2030

Preserving the environment is a major challenge for modern society, and reducing the greenhouse effect caused by combustion processes is a primary concern. It is known that nitrogen compounds (NOx) negatively impact air quality and public health. Internal combustion engines, responsible for nearly half of the atmosphere's pollutants, have prompted public policymakers to phase out gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles in the near future. Carbon capture and storage technologies, including oxy-fuel combustion, are being developed to address these environmental challenges. To predict exhaust pollutants such as NO and CO, assuming that the exhaust gases resulting from fuel and air combustion are in chemical equilibrium is a useful approximation. In the current case study, a numerical investigation on the impact of modifying the oxygen content of the reaction mixture from 21% to 100% on the equilibrium composition of C8H18 air-enriched combustion was conducted. Specifically, the equilibrium-constant approach routines were tailored for 10 species reported in the literature to the conditions of oxy-fuel combustion. Additionally, a comprehensive analysis was performed by varying the temperature and equivalence ratio alongside the oxygen level. The results emphasize the intricate interplay between various factors in oxy-combustion and provide valuable insight into the equilibrium product formation in oxy-fuel combustion. Notably, the non-uniform reduction of N2 as a function of O2 is highlighted, with an overall reduction rate of 0.93 observed across the range of O2 percentages from 21% to 99%.

Agriculture plays an important role in the economy of many countries, including Vietnam. Traditional agricultural manufacturing processes are inefficient in energy and material consumption and generate substantial carbon emissions. In recent decades, environmentalists and policymakers have been actively involved in the transition from conventional fossil fuels to renewables. This study investigated the potential Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) associated with developing Renewable Energy sources to serve agriculture in Vietnam. The results of the analysis revealed that renewable energy sources have numerous strengths, including reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and the cost of electricity, accessing new technologies, and providing economic benefits to farmers. However, the system also faces several weaknesses and threats, such as policy mechanisms, infrastructure, investment capital, foreign-dependent technologies, and potential environmental impacts. This study provides strategic recommendations to maximize the potential of agrivoltaic systems while mitigating their weaknesses and threats. The findings can help stakeholders make informed decisions and take appropriate actions in the development of renewable energy sources in agriculture.

Unscented Kalman Filter based State of Charge Estimation for the Equalization of Lithium-ion Batteries on Electrical Vehicles

Accurate state of charge estimation and robust cell equalization are vital in optimizing the battery management system and improving energy management in electric vehicles. In this paper, the passive balance control based equalization scheme is proposed using a combined dynamic battery model and the unscented Kalman filter based state of charge estimation. The lithium-ion battery is modeled with a 2nd order Thevenin equivalent circuit. The combined dynamic model of the lithium-ion battery, where the model parameters are estimated depending on the state of charge, and the unscented Kalman filter based state of charge, are used to improve the performance of the passive balance control based equalization. The experimental results verified the superiority of the combined dynamic battery model and the unscented Kalman filter algorithm with very tight error bounds. Furthermore, these results showed that the presented passive balance control based equalization scheme is suitable for the equalization of series-connected lithium-ion batteries.
