Optimization of antioxidant compounds extraction from feijoa (Acca sellowiana berg) residues

Feijoa residues has a high content of bioactive compounds with effective antioxidant activity compared with the content of other fruits. However, these wastes are disposed of without generating added value. Therefore, in order to determine the maximum time to extract the polyphenols (TPC) and flavonoids (TFC) present in the residue, solid-liquid extraction kinetics was performed. Next, in order to find the best conditions for maximizing the simultaneous extraction of TPC and TFC, a central composite design and response surface analysis were proposed. Three independent factors, temperature (ranging from 13.18 to 46.82 °C), solid:liquid ratio (ranging from 1:10 to 1:74 g:mL) and ethanol-water mixture (ranging from 16,36 to 83,64%v/v) were evaluated. The kinetics indicated a maximum extraction time of 90 minutes for TPC with 3,990.02 ± 22.403 mgGAE/100 g FW, and 45 minutes for TFC with 1,219.38 ± 19.24 mgCE/100 g FW. These values are within the range reported by other studies using advanced technology. The optimized extraction conditions were a temperature of 34.5 °C, 1:45 solid-liquid ratio and 39.43% for the solvent. Finally, extract from feijoa residues presented an effective antioxidant activity greater than 50%. Therefore, this residue can be used as a promising source of bioactive compounds with various agro-industrial applications.

Wood extractives usually do not exceed five percent of dry wood mass but can be a serious issue for pulping as well as for the pulp itself. They cause contamination and damages to process equipment and negatively influence pulp quality. This paper addresses not only the extractives-related problems but also different solutions for these issues. It is an extensive review of different technologies for removing wood extractives, starting with methods prior to pulping. Several wood yard operations like debarking, knot separation, and wood seasoning are known to significantly decreasing the amount of wood extractives. Biological treatment has also been proven as a feasible method for reducing the extractives content before pulping, but quite hard to handle. During pulping, the extractives reduction efficiency depends on the pulping method. Mechanical pulping removes the accessory compounds of wood just slightly, but chemical pulping, on the other hand, removes them to a large extent. Organosolv pulping even allows almost complete removal of wood extractives. The residual extractives content can be significantly reduced by pulp bleaching. Nevertheless, different extraction-based methods have been developed for removing wood extractives before pulping or bleaching. They range from organic-solvent-based extractions to novel processes like supercritical fluid extractions, ionic liquids extractions, microwave technology, and ultrasonic-assisted extraction. Although these methods deliver promising results and allow utilization of wood extractives in most cases, they suffer from many drawbacks towards an economically viable industrial-scale design, concluding that further research has to be done on these topics. Solubility of active pharmaceutical ingredients is an important aspect of drug processing and formulation. Although caffeine was a subject of many studies aiming to quantify saturated solutions, many applied solvents suffer from not being environmentally friendly. This work fills this gap by presenting the results of solubility measurements in choline chloride natural deep eutectic solvents, ccNADES, comprising one of seven of the following polyalcohols: glycerol, sorbitol, xylitol, glucose, sucrose, maltose and fructose. The ratio of ccNADES components was optimized for maximizing caffeine solubility at room temperature. Additionally, temperature dependent solubility was measured for the first four systems exhibiting the highest solubility potential, both in their neat forms and in mixtures with water. Results were used for intermolecular interactions assessments using the COSMO-RS-DARE approach, which led to a perfect match between experimental and computed solubility values. An important methodological discussion was provided for an appropriate definition of the systems. Surprising linear trends were observed between the values of fitting parameters and water-ccNADES composition. In addition, comments on selection of the values of the fusion thermodynamic parameters were provided, which led to the conclusion that COSMO-RS-DARE solubility computations can effectively compensate for the inaccuracies of these important physicochemical properties.
