Green tea extract alleviates arsenic-induced biochemical toxicity and lipid peroxidation in rats

Abstract: The present work was undertaken to evaluate the protective effect of an aqueous extract of green tea (GT, Camellia sinensis) leaves against arsenic (NaAsO₂)-induced biochemical toxicity and lipid peroxidation production in experimental rats. The treatment with arsenic exhibited a significant increase in some serum hepatic and renal biochemical parameters (alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, albumin, bilirubin, cholesterol, urea and creatinine). But the co-… Show more

“…Manimaran et al 30 have reported that presence of arsenic leads to increased level of MDA in renal tissue. Messarah et al 31 have reported that arsenic causes increased level of TBARS, being used in the evaluation of lipid peroxidation, in renal tissue. Huang et al 32 have conducted a study with 290 adults who were exposed to arsenic and reported that levels of MDA and 8-hydroxy-2 0 -deoxyguanosine, used as an indicator of DNA damage, and that urine arsenic level was positively correlated with these indicators.…”

“…25 It has been monitored in some studies that As increased activities of the oxidant enzymes such as heme oxygenase-1, cyclooxygenase-2 and NADPH that were considered to responsible for the production of arsenic. [30][31][32] ROS leads to oxidation of macromolecules, mainly cell membrane lipids, proteins and DNA. The oxidation of lipids in the cell membrane causes changes in the membrane characteristics and starts a process that leads up to complete loss of the cell.…”

“…miały na celu zbadanie wpływu wodnego roztworu zielonej herbaty (green tea -GT) na wywołane przez arsen skutki toksyczne i peroksydację lipidów [33]. Doświadczenie prowadzono na szczurach (28 szczurów).…”

“…Jednoczesne zastosowanie GT spowodowało spadek wymienionych parametrów biochemicznych. Autorzy wysunęli więc wniosek, że ekspozycja na arsen powoduje wzrost stresu oksydacyjnego, jednak stosowanie wodnego roztworu zielonej herbaty może łago-dzić toksyczne działanie arsenu [33].…”

“…All of these parameters considered as a highly indicators for kidney damage 24, 25 . Earlier studies showed that arsenic is a heavy metal ion and increases the production of Reactive Oxygen Species(ROS) concomitant with increases the production ofpro-inflammatory cytokines and increased activities of the oxidant enzymes such as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1), cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide Phosphate (NADPH) 26, 27 Paralleled with these findings, kidney histopathological examination revealed a marked interstitial hemorrhage among renal tubules with thickening of lining epithelium of renal tubules and degeneration in proximal convoluted tubules and distal tubules 28 .…”
