GroundBIRD: Observing Cosmic Microwave Polarization at Large Angular Scale with Kinetic Inductance Detectors and High-Speed Rotating Telescope

Abstract: Cosmic microwave background (CMB) is an important source of information about the origin of our universe. In particular, odd-parity large angular scale patterns in the CMB polarization, the primordial B-modes, are strong evidence for an inflationary universe, related to the accelerating expansion of the metric. We are developing a unique telescope, GroundBIRD, to take CMB polarization measurements. The telescope combines novel techniques: high-speed rotation scanning, cold optics, and microwave kinetic inducta… Show more

“…KIDs recently gained a lot of attention as they offer exquisite energy resolution and are naturally multiplexed in the frequency domain, enabling the realization of large arrays monitored with a few readout lines. For this reason, they are now subject of an intense R&D activity for applications in astrophysics [17][18][19][20][21][22][23], in X-ray spectroscopy [24,25], in the search for Dark Matter [26,27], in precision measurements of the coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering [28] and in double-beta decay searches [29][30][31][32][33].…”

“…The GroundBIRD telescope is designed for the precise observation of CMB polarization. The target sensitivity is to constrain the tensor-to-scalar ratio r with a precision of σ r ∼ 0.01 with three year observation [7]. To achieve high enough sensitivity to observe B-modes for large sky coverage, we employ three features: fast rotation scanning, microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) and cold optics [6].…”

“…Studies for the development of MKIDs are currently spreading around the world. Figure 14 shows a photograph of the MKID array reported by the Otani Group at RIKEN [33][34]. The MKIDs were fabricated of a high quality Al film prepared by the MBE method.…”
