Grounding Social Foundations for Integrated Assessment Models of Climate Change

Abstract: Integrated assessment models (IAMs) are commonly used by decision makers in order to derive climate policies. IAMs are currently based on climate‐economics interactions, whereas the role of social system has been highlighted to be of prime importance on the implementation of climate policies. Beyond existing IAMs, we argue that it is therefore urgent to increase efforts in the integration of social processes within IAMs. For achieving such a challenge, we present some promising avenues of research based on the… Show more

“…Recent approaches for understanding such dynamics with classic integrated assessment models (IAMs) use a class of simple WES models that are a standard tool for climate policy (van Vuuren et al 2016, Mathias et al 2020, Keppo et al 2021. They typically consist of a low-complexity ES model driven by a neoclassical economic growth model.…”

“…Recognition of these weaknesses has driven efforts to combine data at finer scales or from outside tightly constrained economic parameters [49][50][51]. For example, the Dynamic and Interactive Vulnerability Assessment (DIVA) tool has incorporated natural-and social science-derived data [52].…”

“…Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) are a class of WES models that are a standard tool for climate policy (Keppo et al 2021, Mathias et al 2020, van Vuuren et al 2016) and typically consist of some low-complexity ES model driven by some more detailed neoclassical growth model. They may have aggregate ES and WS systems (e.g., (Nordhaus 1993)) or some spatial decomposition in the ES and some sectoral decomposition in the WS (e.g., (Nordhaus & Yang 1996)).…”
