Groundwater quality

Abstract: Groundwater is a vital component of water supply for residential, industrial, and agricultural purposes. However, many groundwater basins are being used unsustainably and groundwater contamination is a growing water quality problem. Although anthropogenic activities and natural processes have been increasing the contamination in this valuable water resource, several remediation techniques have been developed in the last few decades to reduce these contamination levels. This review paper focuses on the recent s… Show more

“…12 The microorganism-augmented permeable reactive barriers (Bio-PRBs) focused on artificial bioaugmentation or biostimulation, which was referenced in the definition of Xin et al 13 Bio-PRBs are new types of PRBs that are constructed of microorganism activation or immobilized microorganisms with other media (iron-based materials, biochar, etc.). 14 organisms have an excellent ability to adapt to environmental changes, 15 and they showed great potential for remediating groundwater contaminated with trichloroethene (TCE), petroleum, Cr(VI), and personal care products. 14,16 The roles of microorganisms in Bio-PRBs include providing e − donors, 17 facilitating e − transfer, 18 and degrading contaminants.…”

“…With growing dependence on groundwater resources to meet domestic, agricultural, and industrial needs, access to clean groundwater is a topic of concern all around the world. Anthropogenic activities release a myriad of pollutants that eventually find its way into subsurface aquifers and contaminate groundwater (Motlagh et al, 2020). Groundwater quality and contamination studies have been taken up by researchers around the globe to evaluate the suitability of groundwater for various purposes.…”

“…Microbial toxins such as total coliform, Escherichia coli (E. coli), fecal coliform, and Salmonella are often found in groundwater where treatment facilities are lacking. This microbial contamination results in acute and chronic diseases, such as diarrhea and high fever [30][31][32]. The high volume of sewage dumped into water bodies is a major issue in the industrial era [1].…”
