The water resource is highly demanded in the Yangtze River Delta with a developed economy. Long-term exploitation has posed threats of artificial pollution and seawater intrusion to the shallow groundwater. This study aimed to reveal the hydrochemical characteristics and health risks of shallow groundwater in the coastal plain of the Yangtze River Delta. Also, possible factors affecting groundwater quality were discussed. Methods, such as typical hydrochemical tests, water quality assessment and health risk models, were applied to achieve the study targets. The results showed that the shallow groundwater was slightly alkaline, and the average values of total dissolved solids (TDS) and total hardness (TH) were 930.74 mg/L and 436.20 mg/L, respectively. The main hydrochemical types of groundwater were Ca+Mg-HCO3 and Ca/Na-HCO3, accounting for 44.3% and 47.5%, respectively. In addition, As concentration was generally high, with a mean value of 0.0115 mg/L. The principal factors affecting the groundwater components include water-rock interactions (especially silicate), cation exchange, seawater intrusion and human activities. As in the groundwater is strongly influenced by the redox of Fe, Mn, and NO3 -. The results of the groundwater quality evaluation indicated that the shallow groundwater in some regions was unsuitable for drinking and agricultural irrigation.Health risk assessment showed that 44.3% of the water samples had significant health risks, which was attributed to the high As concentration. Therefore, it is urgent to establish long-term As monitoring to maintain sustainable groundwater management and drinking water safety. The results of this study can provide essential data for water resource management and human health protection in the Yangtze River Delta.

Moroccan Groundwater Resources and Evolution with Global Climate Changes

In semi-arid areas, many ecosystems and activities depend essentially on water availability. In Morocco, the increase of water demands combined to climate change induced decrease of precipitation put a lot of pressure on groundwater. This paper reports the results of updating and evaluation of groundwater datasets with regards to climate scenarios and institutional choices. The continuous imbalance between groundwater extraction and recharge caused a dramatic decline in groundwater levels (20 to 65 m in the past 30 years). Additionally, Morocco suffers from the degradation in groundwater quality due to seawater intrusion, nitrate pollution and natural salinity changes. Climate data analysis and scenarios predict that temperatures will increase by 2 to 4 °C and precipitation will decrease by 53% in all catchments over this century. Consequently, surface water availability will drastically decrease, which will lead to more extensive use of groundwater. Without appropriate measures, this situation will jeopardize water security in Morocco. In this paper, we zoom on the case the Souss-Massa basin, where management plans (artificial recharge, seawater desalination, and wastewater reuse) have been adopted to restore groundwater imbalance or, at least, mitigate the recorded deficits. These plans may save water for future generations and sustain crop production.

Salinization is an environmental issue that affects different regions worldwide. Geochemical approaches and statistical tools are combined to investigate the origin and process of groundwater salinization in Menzel Habib shallow aquifer. The inland aquifer from Menzel Habib area is in the northwest of Gabès, southeastern Tunisia. A total of twenty-five water samples were selected and collected in the study area. Physicochemical parameters (electrical conductivity, pH, total dissolved solids) were measured in situ, and major ions (Na, Mg, Ca, K, Cl, SO 4 , HCO 3 , F, and Br) were determined. The obtained results show a Na-Cl groundwater dominant facies (60%), Na-SO 4 (36%), and mixed water type (4%). Thus, a correlation between total dissolved solids and major ions shows the contribution of SO 4 , Cl, Na, Ca, and Mg in groundwater salinization. The salinization of groundwater is due to the dissolution of Triassic evaporites, which are related to the tectonic context of the region, and to the cationic exchange. Furthermore, statistical approaches, especially principal component analysis, reveal that the high groundwater mineralization is due to the evaporite dissolution. Multiple linear regression leads to establish a model linking total dissolved solids to the different chemical elements involved in groundwater salinization.Keyword Salinization . Groundwater .
