Arsenic (As) contamination in drinking groundwater is a common environmental problem in Pakistan. Therefore, sixty-one groundwater samples were collected from various groundwater sources in District Sanghar, Sindh province, Pakistan, to understand the geochemical behavior of elevated As in groundwater. Statistical summary showed the cations and anions abundance in decreasing order of Na+ > Ca2+ > Mg2+ > K+, and HCO3− > Cl− > SO42− > NO3−. Arsenic was found with low to high concentration levels ranging from 5 µg to 25 µg/L with a mean value of 12.9 µg/L. A major water type of groundwater samples was mixed with NaCl and CaHCO3 type, interpreting the hydrochemical behavior of rock–water interaction. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed the mixed anthropogenic and natural sources of contamination in the study area. Moreover, rock weathering and exchange of ions controlled the hydrochemistry. Chloro-alkaline indices revealed the dominance of the reverse ion exchange mechanism in the region. The entropy water quality index (EWQI) exposed that 17 samples represent poor water, and 11 samples are not suitable for drinking.

This research was conducted to examine the drinking (WQI1) and irrigation (WQI2) water quality for the Bhavani river basin using statistical methodologies. The study area geographically covers up to 4207 km2. For evaluating the Water Quality Index (WQI), fourteen groundwater parameters were employed and the data was gathered for two decades (1972–1990 & 2010–2019). The groundwater parameters include TDS, pH, EC, TH, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, CO3 2-, HCO3 - , NO3 - , Cl- , F- and SO4 2-. The weightage arithmetic approach was utilized to compute the WQI1 and all the parameters were spatially represented using Arc GIS 10.3 software. To compute the WQI2, the Sodium Absorption Ratio (SAR), Sodium Percentage (%Na), Residual Sodium Carbonate (RSC), Magnesium Hazard Ratio (MHR), Kelly's Ratio (KR), Permeability Index (PI) and Potential Salinity (PI) are employed. The hydro-geochemical features are statistically examined using the Piper trilinear diagram, Gibbs plot, correlation matrix and PCA biplot. The study results suggest that irrigation-and drinking-water quality is worsening from 2% to 44% of the studied region. Statistical analysis also yields satisfactory findings for both decades. According to the geochemical study, the anion and cation ranking for the 1972 decade is Mg2+> Ca+> Na+> K+=Cl- >HCO3 - ->CO3 2->SO4 2-, while the ranking for the 2019 decade is Na+> Mg2+> Ca+> K+=HCO3 - >Cl- >SO4 2->CO3 2->F- . The research indicates viable locations for drinking and irrigation reasons, while the low groundwater quality areas need effective treatment procedures before groundwater utilization. The current study was conducted with sampling of eighty-four groundwater sample which was used for analyzing various physico- chemical properties in groundwater to assess the status of irrigation water quality and their hydro-geochemistry.For this purpose, different ionic concentration pH, EC, TDS, TH, Ca2+, Mg2+, Na+, K+, Cl−, SO42−, CO32− and HCO3− were determine in groundwater and used to calculate the various irrigation water quality parameters like SAR, Na %, RSC, MHR, KR, PI%, PS and RSBC. The groundwater sample pH was ranged from 7.9 to 9.3 with having electrical conductivity of 90 µS/cm to 2000 µS/cm. Among the all-sampled groundwater 2.38%, 1.19%, 5.95%, 16.67%, and 2.38% water samples were unsuitable for irrigation water due to having high loading of PI, KR, MHR, RSC and PS value, respectively. The ionic concentration orders werefound in terms of cations Ca2+> Na+> Mg2+> K+ and anions HCO3−> Cl−> SO42−in groundwater. The piper trilinear diagram suggested Ca (Mg)- HCO3−, Ca (Mg)-Cl− and mixed type water was dominated in the study area. The Gibbs and other bivariate plot were indicated that the silicate weathering and ion exchange phenomenafrom rock water interaction was mainly responsible for the different ion’s sources in groundwater instead of evaporite and carbonate dissolutions.
