Growth, antioxidant capacity and total carotene of Dunaliella salina DCCBC15 in a low cost enriched natural seawater medium

Abstract: Dunaliella is currently drawing worldwide attention as an alternative source of nutraceuticals. Commercially, β-carotene making up over 10% of Dunaliella biomass is generating the most interest. These compounds, because of their non-toxic properties, have found applications in the food, drug and cosmetic industry. The β-carotene content of Dunaliella cells, however, depends heavily on the growth conditions and especially on the availability of nutrients, salinity, irradiance and temperature in the growth mediu… Show more

“…There is immense interest in natural antioxidants because they provide protection by scavenging the free radicals. Studies have shown that D. salina exhibits antioxidant activity by means of carotenes production (Murthy et al 2005;Tran et al 2014). Madkour and Abdel-Daim (2013) reported the hepatoprotective effect of D. salina due to the presence of carotenoids in the extract which are known for their antioxidant activity.…”

“…The algae were grown in the MD4 medium (1.5M NaCl) according to Tran et al [36]. Briefly, the medium contained natural seawater, and was added with NPK 0.1 g/L, MgSO 4 1.86 g/L, EDTA 0.00876 g/L, FeCl 3 0.00049 g/L, MnCl 2 0.00189 g/L, NaHCO 3 50mM, pH = 7.5.…”

“…Since this alga was found to provide one of the richest natural sources of b-carotene as a constituent of its useful carotenoids, D. salina has become an increasingly attractive biomass source, capable of yielding multiple value streams [8]. In addition, D. salina has the ability to survive and accumulate high lipids and triacylglycerides under high salt concentrations [9].…”
