Growth factor release from dentine matrix by pulp‐capping agents promotes pulp tissue repair‐associated events

Abstract: White and grey MTA solubilize a broad range of bioactive molecules from dentine, which can induce proliferation and chemotaxis in pulp cells.

“…Ongoing research shows the impact of different growth factors encapsulated in dentine (Tomson et al . ). The fact that the regenerative potential of the pulpo‐dentinal complex is evident in teeth with symptoms indicative of irreversible pulpitis suggests that the current classification of pulpitis may need to be revised (Ricucci et al .…”

“…, Tomson et al . ). Such treatment modalities have two major advantages: first, pulp tissue is preserved, thus maintaining its physiological and defensive functions; secondly, less hard tooth tissue is removed, which results in less weakening of the tooth.…”

“…Thus, bioactive proteins from the dentine matrix are released and re-activated by demineralization (Dung et al 1995). In addition, dentine contains angiogenic proteins such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) or platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) as well as neurotrophins such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and glial cell-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) (Roberts-Clark & Smith 2000, Tomson et al 2017. Furthermore, dentine contains various growth factors and cytokines that had once been embedded by the odontoblasts during dentinogenesis, such as transforming growth factor b1 (TGF-b1), fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF-2), insulinlike growth factor 1 and 2 (IGF-1 und -2), placenta growth factor (PlGF), epidermal growth factor (EGF) or bone morphogenetic protein 2 (BMP-2) (Finkelman et al 1990, Casagrande et al 2010, Chun et al 2011, Widbiller et al 2018).…”
