Growth in human population and consumption both need to be addressed to reach an ecologically sustainable future

Abstract: Nowadays, human activities are causing an important collapse in global biodiversity while also affecting the global climate considerably. Despite historical agreements on both biodiversity conservation and climate change, humanity keeps changing the face of the planet at an increasing rate. An undisputed factor in global change is the excessive and growing human consumption. On the other hand, it seems that linking humanity's environmental impact with population growth has been quite controversial in the inter… Show more

“…Current population growth, massive land-use changes, and patterns of overconsumption are unsustainable ( Ganivet, 2019 ). Rapid and profound human-driven socio-economic changes are driving climate change ( Masson-Delmotte et al, 2018 ).…”

“…Thus, despite advances in water technology, the degraded state of many of Earth's common pool resources have led to suggestions that the only solution may be demographic (Anderson, 2019; Campbell et al, 2013; Carmi & Tal, 2019; Crist et al, 2017; Ganivet, 2019; Potts, 2014; Ripple et al, 2017; Ripple et al, 2019; Tal, 2017; Warren, 2015; Warren, 2016; Wine, 2020). Nonetheless, the mainstream response to environmental degradation, as Earth struggles to support a growing population, remains solutions that improve efficiency in food production, consumption, and land use (Foley et al, 2011; Godfray et al, 2010; Lambin & Meyfroidt, 2011).…”

“…In 1999, ecologist Peter Vitousek stated that “we are the first generation with tools to understand changes in the Earth’s systems caused by human activity, and the last with the opportunity to influence the course of many of these changes” (quoted from [ 215 ]). More than ever, humanity is changing the face of the planet at an increasing rate and conducting an unprecedented “environmental breakdown”.…”

“…This has led to a global collapse of biodiversity with an average 60% decline in populations of all vertebrate species and up to 83% for freshwater species between 1970 and 2014 as measured by the Living Planet Index [ 218 ]. Human activities currently threaten approximately 1 million species with extinction, with many others already extinct [ 215 ]. Considering this rapid loss of biodiversity, the world is now facing a sixth mass extinction [ 219 ]; the first to be caused by the species Homo sapiens [ 215 ].…”
