The use of pesticides to eliminate pests and weeds has raised concerns about water pollution and adverse effects on aquatic organisms, so many efforts have been made to increase the resistance of fish to these pesticides by using a proper nutrition strategy. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate the growth performance, antioxidant, and immune responses of fish exposed to Imidacloprid insecticide (C9H10ClN5O2) by different doses of Chlorella vulgaris dry powder to the diet of common carp (Cyprinus carpio). In this study, 600 common carp with a medium weight (18.10±0.2 g; Mean ± SE) were prepared and after adaptation and determination of lethal concentration of Imidacloprid, for 56 days in 6 treatments and each with 3 replications were classified and tested (Control (T1), 5% Chlorella vulgaris dry powder and no pollution (T2), 10% Chlorella vulgaris dry powder and no pollution (T3), No Chlorella vulgaris dry powder and 12.5% LC50 Imidacloprid (T4), 5% Chlorella vulgaris dry powder plus 12.5% LC50 imidacloprid (T5) and 10% Chlorella vulgaris dry powder plus 12.5% LC50 Imidacloprid (T6)). After 96 hours of exposure to distinct concentrations of the insecticide, the total mortality was measured and the Imidacloprid median lethal concentration (LC50) over 96 hours was calculated (266.2 mg/l) using Probit analysis. According to the result, common carp fed T2 had the highest final weight (FW), weight gain (WG), and specific growth rate (SGR), and the lowest feed conversion ratio (FCR) among the groups (P<0.05). Fish in the T2 group had the highest Total proteins, Albumin and Globulin (P<0.05). Fish in the group T4 had the highest Cortisol, Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH), Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST), and Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) levels in the blood, while fish fed T2 and T3 had low values (P<0.05). The Alternative Complement Pathway (ACH50) was significantly higher in T2 and T3 than other groups (P<0.05). Blood total Immunoglobulin (Ig) and Lysozyme activity were high in T2 and T3 groups, and had the lowest values in the T4 group (P<0.05). The Superoxide Dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT) and Glutathione Peroxidase (GPx) showed the highest activities in T2 (P<0.05). T4 group had the highest Malondialdehyde (MDA) level, while T2 and T3 groups had the lowest MDA level (P<0.05). The highest Amylase, Protease and Lipase were in the T2 group, while the lowest values were in the T4 group (P<0.05). In conclusion, dietary Chlorella vulgaris protects common carp from Imidacloprid insecticide, since it improved growth performance, antioxidant and immune responses of fish.

The use of essential oils (EO's) as feed additive has been explored as tool to improve fish growth and health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the oregano essential oil (OEO) (Origanum vulgare) dietary supplementation for the catfish Lophiosilurus alexandri. Four diets supplemented with different OEO levels (0.0, 1.0, 2.0 and 4.0 g kg−1) were evaluated in a feed trial conducted with fish of 15.7 ± 1.8 g and 9.5 ± 0.45 cm for 13 weeks. Were evaluated growth performance, biochemical parameters, intestinal histomorphometry, whole‐body composition and muscle growth. Polynomial analysis showed that weight gain, length gain and specific growth rate were improved in fish fed with OEO supplemented diets, being 2.37, 2.56 and 2.33 g kg−1 the respective levels that maximize these variables. Plasma glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL increased with OEO levels between 1.80–2.47 g kg−1. Intestinal histomorphometry was not affected by OEO. Body protein content and hyperplasic muscle fibres were maximized with 2.10 and 2.25 g kg−1 OEO, respectively. Body moisture, total lipids, ash and hypertrophic muscle fibres were not affected by OEO. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with 2.10–2.56 g kg−1 OEO improves growth performance, body protein retention and muscle growth of L. alexandri.

Edwardsiella tarda is one of the most common causes of fish diseases that hinder aquaculture. Oxidative stress in farm animals can induce a number of pathological disorders, production and general animal welfare. The use of exogenous dietary nonenzymatic antioxidants such as alpha‐lipoic acid (ALA) can stop a pro‐oxidant state and thus appears to have the potential to modulate the immune system and protect fish from bacterial infection. Thus, this study investigates the stimulatory effect of dietary ALA on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, liver enzymes, immunity and protection of African catfish, Clarias gariepinus (B.), against an infection with E. tarda. Five isonitrogenous and isocaloric diets (400 g/kg of crude protein) containing ALA at doses of 0.0 (control), 500, 1000, 1500 or 2000 mg/kg diet were served to 300 juveniles of African catfish (mean weight = 8.2 ± 0.2 g) adequately thrice per day for 12 weeks. Thereafter, 0.1 mL of E. tarda (ATCC 15947; 1.0 × 108 CFU/mL) was intraperitoneally injected into 10 fish from each tank and was monitored for 14 days. The results showed that ALA‐fortified diets significantly boosted the fish growth, feed consumption and utilization and feed conversion ratio but no did not affect fish survival rate. The highest final fish weight (g), weight growth (g) and weight gain (%) were all considerably higher in fish fed with ALA‐fortified diets (p < 0.05), especially from 1000 to 200 mg/kg ALA than the control group. Also, an enhanced hemato‐biochemical, antioxidant and immune indices were noticed in African catfish‐fed ALA‐enriched diets. In a dose‐dependent order, the levels of haematological indices such Ht, Hb, RBCs, WBCs and platelets were markedly increased (p < 0.05). Additionally, fish fed with ALA‐based diets showed substantial (p < 0.05) declines in aspartate and alanine aminotransferase values, with the lowest values being found in the 2000 mg/kg diet while control group had highest values. Further, African catfish fed the feed fortified with 2000 mg ALA/kg diet showed the highest levels of lysozyme, respiratory burst, proteases and esterase activities (p < 0.05). Following exposure of fish to E. tarda infection, a significant reduction in the mortality was obtained in African catfish fed with ALA‐based diets, especially from 1500 to 2000 mg ALA/kg diet (3.3%); while fish fed with the control diet had highest mortality (86.7%). Therefore, diets supplemented with ALA evoked fish growth performance, antioxidants and nonspecific immunity of African catfish. Also, resistance of African catfish to E. Tarda infection were raised when fed ALA‐fortified diets at optimum inclusion rate of 1300 mg ALA/kg diet.
