Environmental enrichment (EE) can improve the welfare of captive fish. Its objective is to provide new sensorial and motor stimulation in order to help meet their behavioural, physiological, morphological and psychological needs, whilst reducing stress and frequency of abnormal behaviours. In fish farms, rearing environments are usually designed from a human perspective and based on economic requirements, mainly for practical reasons for the farmer, with little consideration for animal welfare. Throughout aquaculture production cycles, many farming operations can be stressful for fish, and EE may not only help them cope with these stressful events but also improve their overall welfare. In recent years, increasing interest on the effects of EE in captive fish has focussed mainly on structural enrichment. However, there are many other enrichment strategies that merit attention (e.g. sensorial, occupational, social and dietary enrichment) and which may be of interest for fish farming. Here, we review in depth the existing literature on EE and its effects on the welfare of a wide range of farmed fish species, discussing the feasibility and potential applications of different EE strategies to promote fish welfare at a commercial scale. We also present a practical framework to address the design, validation and implementation of EE by the aquaculture industry, taking in consideration the technical challenges of providing enrichment for farmed fish.

Light and temperature are necessary conditions for migratory fish. The assessment of fish physiology and behavior is important for identifying fish welfare, but also for the assessment of the optimal setting of recirculating aquaculture systems (RASs). This study aimed to explore the interactive effect of photoperiod and temperature on steelhead trout culture. Four treatments were set up with specific settings were as follows: a LP-LT group treated with 16L:8D and 12°C, a LP-HT group treated with 16L:8D and 16°C, a SP-LT group treated with 12L:12D and 12°C, and a SP-HT group treated with 12L:12D and 16°C. Growth performance, behavioral and physiological parameters were measured. Two indexes, locomotor activity and social interaction were used for behavioral analysis, and the results were applied to interpret the behavioral responses to the photoperiod and temperature stimulation in juveniles. The growth performances were significantly lower in treatments LP-LT and SP-LT. The treatment LP-HT had significantly higher growth performance than the other treatments, but no significant differences were noted in survival rate and coefficient of variation. The results of fish behavior indicated that the movement of juveniles should be primarily monitored at high temperatures or long photoperiods, and the state parameters should be primarily monitored at low temperatures or short photoperiods. The results of the physiological parameters showed that the recovery time from stress varied among different treatments. After 60 days of the experiment, superoxide dismutase and alanine aminotransferase dropped back to their initial level. The results of Na+-K+-ATPase showed that although the combined effect of photoperiod and temperature could advance the time of smoltification, it may result in poorer salt tolerance. Our findings underscore the importance of the interaction of photoperiod and temperature on steelhead trout culture. The outcome could provide guidance for the development of effective aquaculture systems.

Fish aggression has significant individual differences, and different personalities exhibit distinct behavioral performances and physiological stress responses. Under intensive culture conditions, Sebastes schlegelii juveniles display severe aggression and cannibalism, causing fish welfare and economic loss. Herein, we investigated the alterations in behavioral performance and physiological stress indicators of Sebastes schlegelii juveniles with different aggressive strengths. The results revealed that latency to the first movement, distance to center-point, mobile frequency, and immobile frequency were significantly lower in high-aggressive individuals than low-aggressive individuals. In contrast, the immobile time was significantly higher in high-aggressive individuals compared to low-aggressive individuals. PCA was performed to identify the key parameters of fish behavior. From the results of PCA, position, motion state, and physical status could be used as behavioral screening indicators for individuals with different aggressions. The 5-HIAA/5-HT ratio was significantly lower in high-aggressive individuals than in low-aggressive individuals. Moreover, cortisol levels were positively correlated with immobile time, and the ratio of 5-HIAA/5-HT was significantly and positively correlated with the distance to the central point. These results suggest that different aggressive individuals can be identified according to position, motion state, and physical status in a short period of time, while the distance to center-point associated with brain monoaminergic activity may be a more accurate indicator. The results not only provide a non-invasive method for reducing fish aggression but also help to enhance precise management in aquaculture.
