Guest editorial: Sports management research using partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM)

Abstract: The development of PLS-SEM into a standard method in management research Wold (1982) developed the method of partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) (also see J€ oreskog and Wold, 1982b, c). Lohm€ oller (1989) extended the initial method and prepared the first software (LVPLS; see Lohm€ oller, 1984Lohm€ oller, , 1987. The dissemination of PLS-SEM started with the publication of tutorials by Barclay et al. (1995), Chin (1998) and Tenenhaus et al. (2005), as well as the availability of PLSGr… Show more

“…The PLS-SEM technique has been widely used as a useful tool for business research (Rigdon et al, 2017). In particular, sport management has been regarded as a particularly appropriate discipline for applying PLS-SEM to estimate complex interrelationships, such as direct, indirect, and moderating relationships (Cepeda-Carri on et al, 2022). As the research model examines the mediating and moderating effects, the PLS-SEM technique is deemed suitable as it estimates the path coefficients with reduced error terms (Hair et al, 2022;Sarstedt et al, 2016).…”

“…This methodology is an excellent option for conducting analyses in social science studies (Cachón-Rodríguez et al, 2021 ) and is supported by published studies in the areas of economics, sociology, business and others (Schnelbächer and Heidenreich, 2020 ). This is not only evidence of the exponential increase in the use of PLS-SEM in research articles, but also of the introduction of PLS-SEM as one of the main methods of analysis in statistical analysis books (Cepeda-Carrión et al, 2022 ). In the case of novel studies, Hair et al ( 2019 ) advise using PLS-SEM, since its analysis allows a more sensitive study of these experimental relationships.…”

“…At the same time, review articles have emerged on how researchers in business and other disciplines have applied the method including, for example, agriculture, engineering, environmental sciences, ecology, geography, linguistics, human resources management, entrepreneurship, sports management, and psychology (e.g. Manley et al ., 2021; Legate et al ., 2022; Sarstedt et al ., 2014; Ali et al ., 2018; Willaby et al ., 2015; Cepeda-Carrión et al. , 2022; Hair and Alamer, 2022).…”
