PurposeThis article of exploratory research provides a critical perspective on accountability, focusing on three characteristics: transparency, asymmetry and individual agency. An experimental method is developed, calling for an ethics of accountability.Design/methodology/approachFour entrepreneurs have given accounts of themselves and their projects in life cycle interviews. This article applies Devereux's approach (1967), which allows for opacity (the “unconscious”) to oneself and to others with symmetry between analysts and analysed, and a lack of demarcation between the observer and the observed.FindingsA tragic entrepreneurial accountability trap of continuous self-justification was discovered, which pertains both to the entrepreneurs and the researchers. Nonetheless, the researchers as inspired by Devereux's method were able to realize a form of accounterability.Social implicationsThis article shows that the demands for transparent, asymmetrical and agentive accountability call for ethical reflection. The request for accounts, as resulting in the accounts given and the research conducted into accountability, are all sources of constraints. Differing the accountability situation may lessen the constraints.Originality/valueThis study introduces Devereux's method as an investigative tool in accountability research, opening up new perspectives on communication and analysis. This article shows the researcher as situated both inside and outside of the accountability mechanisms. This article explores a singular form of accountability; that of entrepreneurs who seemingly only account for the future, thereby disconnecting them from others.

Purpose This study aims to highlight the processes that private organisations implement to improve access to health care services for low-income communities in Brazil. Design/methodology/approach A qualitative research based on a comparative case study was conducted in São Paulo. A for-profit organisation and a not-for-profit one were compared to scrutinise how they adapt themselves to the social context they are embedded in; while improving their service accessibility. Findings Both kinds of organisations have succeeded to reach their goal of improving the access and reducing the time frame of health care services to low-income populations. Their initial business model (BM) makes them face their own challenges that they face with different strategies. It affects their way of communicating, their organisational culture, the patients’ expectations and their level of inclusiveness. Research limitations/implications The research is context-dependent because of the specific conditions of the health public system in Brazil. When shaping health care BMs, the national context must be taken into account and the service marketing components should be used to enhance patients’ value co-creation in the health care service delivery process. Practical implications The research gives insights to organisations that seek to adapt their BM to improve health-care access to low-income populations. Social implications Health-care access plays a key role in improving populations’ living conditions and reach one of the sustainable development goals of the United Nation. Originality/value Health care services access at the bottom of the pyramid remains under-studied. The paper brings value by comparing for-profit and non-profit organisations, which have the same social goal of improving health-care access to low-income populations while developing different practices to deal with their own challenges.

Plus de trois décades après le premier numéro spécial d’une revue internationale consacré aux relations entre art et organisations (Benghozi, 1987) et presque vingt ans après le seul numéro de la RIPCO consacré aux arts, ce numéro spécial Arts et Organisations : des individus aux structures, la dimension esthétique inséparable de la dimension politique s’intéressera au rôle de l’art dans les organisations et en particulier à sa contribution éventuelle à une meilleure articulation entre les aspects personnels, interpersonnels et structurels de la vie organisationnelle. Nous chercherons à explorer en quoi, comment et pourquoi l’art et ses pratiques pourraient influer les comportements, les perceptions, les représentations et la recherche organisationnels. Alors que se généralisent les appels aux affects, à la création, à l’innovation, à l’imagination, à l’intuition, au jeu et à l’improvisation, qui seraient nécessaires pour gérer les organisations contemporaines dans un monde de plus en plus complexe et imprévisible, il s’agit de procéder à une synthèse des tendances du champ, qui soit accessible aux chercheurs francophones et qui resitue la recherche française sur ces sujets dans la perspective internationale. L’objectif, dans la ligne éditoriale de la revue, sera de penser le lien entre l’humain et les structures, du micro individuel au méso et au macro, c’est-à-dire penser le lien entre l’expérience subjective et concrète des membres et l’abstraction des concepts et des politiques organisationnels.
