Brackish groundwater desalination is increasingly being considered as a means to supplement drinking water in regions facing scarce freshwater supplies. Desalination is more energy intensive and expensive than traditional freshwater sources. One method of offsetting carbon emissions is to pair desalination technology with renewable energy sources. This research assesses the geographical feasibility of using a geothermal multi-effect distillation (MED) plant to produce freshwater from brackish aquifers in Texas. The system is analyzed using a thermodynamic model of a binary cycle MED plant. The thermodynamic model is integrated with spatially resolved information of Texas’ geothermal gradient and existing brackish well data (such as depth, salinity, and temperature) to quantify production potential. The results from this study allow for a comparison of potential geothermal desalination plant implementation across all of Texas, rather than a single site assessment. Although this water treatment approach is technologically viable across much of Texas, the system proves to be very energy intensive in all areas except for two hot geopressured fairways in Southeast Texas, the Frio and the Wilcox. In both locations, our research concludes the binary cycle-MED plant can operate self-sufficiently, producing both freshwater and electricity. One well in the fairways can produce 121–1132 m3 of water per day, enough for 232–2133 people. The framework outlined in this paper can be useful to policymakers and water planners considering where to build desalination facilities.

Geothermal exploration is typically limited to high-grade hydrothermal reservoirs that are usually found in the western United States, yet large areas with subsurface temperatures above 150°C at economic drilling depths can be found east of the Rocky Mountains , which is associated with the apparently highly radioactive basement of the Sabine uplift. The geothermal resource in this area is large and diverse, and can be divided in high grade (temperature above 150°C) convective systems, conductive based enhanced geothermal systems and geothermal/geopressured systems. One of the most attractive areas east of the cordillera extends from eastern Texas across Louisiana and Arkansas to western Mississippi. Here temperatures reach exploitation range at depths below 4 km, and tapping such a resource from shut in hydrocarbon fields is relatively easy. The initial costs of the development can be greatly reduced if existing hydrocarbon infrastructure is used, and therefore using shut-in hydrocarbon fields for geothermal purposes should not be neglected.

Geothermal energy is a clean, renewable energy resource that is widely available and reliable. Improved drilling and heat conversion systems make geothermal energy an increasingly attractive alternative. Downhole heat exchangers (DHEs) can accelerate the development of geothermal energy by reducing the capital cost and the risk of microquakes or subsidence. However, lowenthalpy geothermal resources are difficult to develop economically because of low heat extraction efficiency. In this study, a coaxial DHE concept is proposed to exploit forced convection driven by a downhole pump inside a horizontal wellbore. Two configurations of the proposed design are introduced, each having different flow paths for working and reservoir fluids. One system-which circulates working fluid through the innermost tubing in the coaxial arrangement has better thermal exchange efficiency of about 29%, and is evaluated by coupling it to a simple model for a binary power generation plant and a geothermal reservoir simulator. Thermodynamic analysis evaluates the DHE performance for electricity generation. A field case study of the Camerina A reservoir (Vermillion Parish, Louisiana) demonstrates a net power of about 350kW can be generated by a turbine even after 30 years of production.
