Acid gas removal from gaseous streams such as flue gas, natural gas and biogas is mainly performed by chemical absorption with amines, but the process is highly energy intensive and can generate emissions of harmful compounds to the atmosphere. Considering the emerging interest in carbon capture, mainly associated with increasing environmental concerns, there is much current effort to develop innovative solvents able to lower the energy and environmental impact of the acid gas removal processes. To be competitive, the new blends must show a CO2 uptake capacity comparable to the one of the traditional MEA benchmark solution. In this work, a review of the state of the art of attractive solvents alternative to the traditional MEA amine blend for acid gas removal is presented. These novel solvents are classified into three main classes: biphasic blends—involving the formation of two liquid phases, water-lean solvents and green solvents. For each solvent, the peculiar features, the level of technological development and the main expected pros and cons are discussed. At the end, a summary on the most promising perspectives and on the major limitations is provided.

Acid gas removal, especially H 2 S and CO 2 , is an essential process in natural gas processing. In this research, 1butyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide [bmim][Br] ionic liquid was analyzed as a hydrophobic solvent with has high selectivity to H 2 S as an environmentally friendly solvent to absorb acid gas from natural gas with low H 2 S/ CO 2 concentration in ambient temperature and pressure. The absorption performance of pure [bmim][Br] ionic liquid was compared with various amine solutions, such as monoethanolamine (MEA), triethanolamine (TEA), and methyldiethanolamine (MDEA), as well as the mixture of [bmim][Br]-MDEA with various concentration. As a result, pure [bmim][Br] ionic liquid had high selectivity to H 2 S compared with conventional amine solutions. In addition, the mixture of [bmim][Br]-MDEA with the mass ratio of 1:3 provided the highest H 2 S/CO 2 selectivity of 6.2 in certain absorption conditions due to free tertiary amine attached in the cations of ionic liquids that can attract more H 2 S to its functional site.

The surface tension and viscosity values of N-methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) aqueous solutions promoted by tetramethylammonium arginate ([N1111][Arg]) were measured and modeled. The experimental temperatures were 303.2 to 323.2 K. The mass fractions of MDEA (wMDEA) and [N1111][Arg] (w[N1111][Arg]) were 0.300 to 0.500 and 0.025 to 0.075, respectively. The measured surface tension and viscosity values were satisfactorily fitted to thermodynamic models. With the aid of experimentally viscosity data, the activation energy (Ea) and H2S diffusion coefficient (DH2S) of MDEA-[N1111][Arg] aqueous solution were deduced. The surface entropy and surface enthalpy of the solutions were calculated using the fitted model of the surface tension. The quantitative relationship between the calculated values (surface tension, surface entropy, surface enthalpy, viscosity, activation energy, and H2S diffusion coefficient) and the operation conditions (mass fraction and temperature) was demonstrated.
