Haematological and biochemical reference intervals in healthy Ragdoll cats

Abstract: Objectives Breed-specific reference intervals (RIs) may be necessary to avoid misinterpretation of laboratory results. The main aim of this study was to establish haematobiochemical RIs for Ragdoll cats. Methods Forty-two clinically healthy adult (0.8–10 years old) Ragdoll cats (Ragdoll population [RP]) and 60 non-Ragdoll cats as the control population (CP) were prospectively enrolled. Results of haematology, biochemistry and total thyroxine (TT4) were used to determine both Ragdoll-specific and general feline… Show more

“…Dybing et al (2018) and Ursache et al (2021) stated that nematodiasis or helminthiasis is often not accompanied by any clinical symptoms. The animals had an overall body condition score range of 4.56-5.57, which could be categorized as ideal for cats (Bjornvad et al 2011) and the average value of some hematological and blood chemical parameters, which were still in the physiological range (Ferriani et al 2022). In contrast to this condition, Toxocara and Ancylostoma infestation might result in some clinical findings, e.g., diarrhea, dull hair, anorexia, vomiting (Calista et al 2019;Ursache et al 2021), anemia, enteritis, andhypoalbuminemia (Epe 2009).…”

“…The result is a polyclonal gammopathy, an elevated level of circulating immunoglobulins which do not contribute to an effective immune response. Globulin levels can also be affected by breed, with a recent study reporting that healthy Ragdoll cats sampled in Italy had lower mean total protein compared to healthy non-Ragdoll cats [ 63 ].…”

“…It has a semi-long, luxurious coat and a huge, heavy build. Ragdolls were created in the 1960s by American breeder Ann Baker, and they are noted for their calm demeanor and loveable personalities [9]. The moniker "ragdoll" stems from the fact that these creatures often collapse when picked up.…”
