Half Diallel Analysis for Biochemical and Morphological Traits in Cultivated Eggplants (Solanum melongena L.)

Abstract: Eleven morphologically diverse cultivated eggplant accessions were used for hybridization following half diallel mating design to obtain 55 hybrids. Evaluation of hybrids along with the parents was conducted over two locations followed by randomised complete block design with three replications to study gene action and combining ability of 15 morphological and biochemical traits. The analysis of variance indicated highly significant differences among the environments and interaction of genotype and environment… Show more

“…There are many publications that reported the results of evaluation of gene action and combining ability in very different crops. For example in rice (Ambikabathy et al, 2021;Del Águila & da Silva, 2021;Gaballah et al, 2022), maize (Yu et al, 2020;Coelho, 2021;Sabitha et al, 2021), sweet corn (Khan et al, 2020), cowpea (Owusu et al, 2020), papaya (Vettorazzi et al, 2021), cotton (Giri et al, 2021;Mudhalvan et al, 2021), eggplants (Datta et al, 2021), groundnut (Daudi et al, 2021), common bean (Nkhata et al, 2021).…”

“…This can be in the form of dominance, over-dominance, and epistatic gene action (Acquaah 2012;Nugraha et al 2016). According to Marwiyah et al (2019), Dianga et al (2020), and Datta et al (2021), the determination of gene action can be carried out by ratios or comparisons of additive and dominant diversity. A ratio of more than 1 indicates that the character is more dominated by additive gene action while a ratio of less than 1 shows that it is influenced by the dominant gene action.…”

“…This is closely related to the pattern of gene action; therefore, it is divided into two types, namely GCA and SCA (Pandiarana et al 2015;Ghareeb and Fares 2016;Kaushik and Dhaliwal 2018;Farooq et al 2019;Vijeth et al 2019). GCA is identical abilities for additive gene action, therefore, genotypes with high GCA tend to produce good progeny vigor after being crossed (Olfati et al 2012;Pandiarana et al 2015;Ene et al 2018;Murtadha et al 2018;Zongo et al 2019;Boyaci et al 2020;Dianga et al 2020;Datta et al 2021). This means that the development of this variety can be directed into pure-line or composite varieties and the formation of hybrids (Bahari et al 2012;Bouchetat andAissat 2019, Marwiyah et al 2019).…”

“…Tripathy et al, (2020) conducted experiment on brinjal and recorded the maximum height of plant was 161.44 cm in Utkal Jyoti variety. Datta et al, (2023) did experiment on brinjal and concluded that the maximum height of plant was 87.83 cm recorded compared to other varieties. Alam et al, (2021) conducted experiment on brinjal and reported the plant height was 76.12 cm all among the other varieties.…”
