Half-life expectations for neutrinoless double beta decay in standard and nonstandard scenarios

Abstract: We investigate the half-life expectations for neutrinoless double beta decay by applying statistical distributions of neutrino mixing observables, neutrino mass constraints from cosmology and nuclear matrix elements. The analysis is performed in the standard scenario of active Majorana neutrino exchange, when light sterile neutrinos are added, and within TeV-scale left-right symmetric frameworks. The latter two cases correspond to a modified phenomenology of double beta decay for a normal and inverted mass ord… Show more

“…The additional contribution to the effective mass from sterile neutrinos, |Ue4| 2 m4 |Ue4| 2 ∆m 2 41 , is of the same order of magnitude as the minimal value of the effective mass in the inverted ordering of active neutrinos. It shifts the half-life distribution toward lower values (34); for normal ordering, the shift is toward larger values. The current situation on light sterile neutrinos is confusing (35); most likely, not all hints are correct.…”

“…Insights can be gained by using oscillation and cosmology data to obtain the probability distribution for m ββ , from which the discovery potential of future experiments can be inferred (32,33,34). Figure 2 shows the "Bayesian discovery probability," which corresponds to the chance of measuring a signal with a significance greater than or equal to 3σ.…”

“…For the similar analysis relevant for the effective neutrino masses in β and 0νββ decays, see Refs. [29][30][31][32][33][34][35]. Here we perform an updated analysis for the direct neutrino mass experiments, in light of a good number of experimental achievements.…”

“…Although the impact of an eV-mass sterile neutrino on the effective neutrino mass |m ee | has been considered in Refs. [39][40][41][42][43][44][45][46][47], a statistical assessment is still lacking. Therefore, we are motivated to perform a Bayesian analysis of |m ee | in this work by using the global-fit results of neutrino oscillation data and other available information on the absolute neutrino masses.…”
