Hand‐raising a philippine tarsier, Tarsius syrichta

Abstract: An infant female tarsier (Tarsius syrichta) weighing 20 g at birth was removed for hand-raising at 1 day of age. The infant was maintained in an incubator (32"C, 80% humidity), and fed every 2-3 hours for the first 10 days of life. The infant received a vaned formula for the first 4 days. Esbilac (3.3-8.0 cc daily) was given for days 5-10. From days 11 to 67 the infant was fed 6.5-8.0 cc of formula seven times daily. A liver fortified formula was introduced on day 53. Birthweight doubled by day 41 and tripled … Show more

“…The male spectral tarsiers at this site were never aggressive to young infants as has been observed among captive populations of Bornean tarsiers [64,65]. However, the aggression observed among captive Bornean tarsiers may be an artifact of captivity as neither R.H. Crompton (personal comm.)…”

“…Instead, these studies have suggested that the infant's postnatal growth rate is correlated with the development of allocaretaking behavior in anthropoid primates. A preliminary examination of the growth rate in spectral tarsiers indicates that, like other tarsiers [36,41,63,64], they have a relatively rapid postnatal growth rate. The mean infant growth rate for 2 male spectral tarsier infants was approximately 0.43 g per day from birth through 9 weeks [36].…”

“…Some species of tarsiers have been successfully bred in captivity. Tarsius syrichta infants were born at the Philadelphia Zoo, Frankfurt Zoo, Cincinnati Zoo, and Duke University Primate Center [Harring and Wright, 1989]. Tarsius bancanus infants were born at the National Zoological Park [Roberts, 1994].…”

“…While there have been significant gains in scientific knowledge about wild Tarsius syrichta in recent years [Neri-Arboleda, 2002;Dagosto et al, 2001], there has been little success in the development of captive breeding programs [Haring and Wright, 1989;Lewis, 1939;Cook, 1939]. In Corella, on the island of Bohol (Fig.…”
