The serum levels of haptoglobin (Hp) and hemopexin (Hx) have been investigated in favism and thalassemia. In 25 children with favism, Hp was absent in 22 and both Hp and Hx in 7 cases. In 45 children with Cooley’s anemia, Hp was absent in 13 and Hx in 37 cases. In 25 adult carriers of thalassemia minor, the findings were similar to those observed in healthy controls. The absence of Hx in spite of moderate hemolysis in most cases of Cooley’s anemia is emphasized.

“…Although Hb H is unstable (Rigas & Koler 1961, Scott et a1 1970, the methaemoglobin concentrations were not increased in any of our patients (Ozsoylu 1967(Ozsoylu , 1972. The slight elevation of plasma haemoglobin concentration (15.5 mg%) (Ozsoylu & Tanyeri 1968) and absence of haptoglobin in the propositus' serum, as demonstrated in patients with beta thalassaemia major (Yamak & Ozsoylu 1969), could be evidence of haemolytic anaemia. The presence of methaemalbumin band in her serum is another indication of haemolytic anaemia.…”

Hb H disease was found in a Turkish woman, her mother and two of her siblings. Although all had mild pallor and two had mild splenomegaly, these persons were asymptomatic. In addition to two anodal bands, interpreted as Hb H and Hb Bart's, a third band was seen on Hb‐starch‐gel electrophoresis at pH 7. The slightly elevated plasma Hb level, the presence of methaemalbumin, and the absence of haptoglobin in the serum of the propositus were attributed to haemolytic anaemia.

The determination of serum haptoglobin types and their distribution in 505 “genuine” unrelated Egyptians revealed a Hp1 gene frequency of 0.34, a Hp2 gene frequency of 0.66 and a slightly higher prevalence of Hp 2‐2 than of Hp 2‐1. Ahaptoglobinaemia was present in 0.40 % of the examined individuals. There were no significant differences between males and females. There were 33 thalassaemia heterozygotes in the sample and these individuals were not at variance with the remainder of the sample population in respect of their serum haptoglobins.
